Park Runs and heart problems

People mention Park runs a fair bit, I love the idea and went twice. But I stopped. I can only jog a little bit, mainly brisk walking, and i finished long after everyone else, with just a few loyal stewards left to cheer me in. Perhaps I was a bit over sensitive about it.

Does anyone know of any examples of initiatives in your local group giving encouragement to hearty duffers who’ll never be sprinting or improving speeds much. I’m 76, three HAs and get AF if my Heart Rate goes over 120.

I took part a while ago in a survey of heart patients, about how Park runs could help our rehab. Did anything come of that?

Hi Kristin

I had a long wait for cardiac rehab so decided to join a local walking group. Called Walking for Health. I was greeted, enthusiastically, by a hoarde of women wearing hiking boots, carrying fearsome Nordic walking poles and carrying little back packs. EEEK. I was still clutching my chest after surgery and moving gently.

Fortunately the group was split according to ability so I joined the aptly named Recovery Group and we strolled or staggered round a walk. The Nordic group strode off into the distance at a fearsome pace, I never saw them again. My little group had a walk leader, a volunteer who walked at the rear of the group and was populated by others, like me, who were still recovering from various ailments - including an inspirational man with a white cane. Great fun, lovely company and a cuppa at the end. I went every week until I got a place on cardiac rehab this week. I will go back.

I know what you mean. No I don't think you are oversensitive - the fit brigade are so busy competing with each other that they forget there are others who, for whatever reasons, need a little more support/encouragement.

Walking for Health operates in most areas - google the name and you will find the website, select your location and find out where they meet. And enjoy the exercise.

Thank you so much, Frances. I’ve begun the hunt locally, after your suggestion. Sounds ideal, and probably better than struggling through a cloud of dust from the wonderfully fit brigade!

I’m sure your rehab will be terrific. Mine was......a true re-start.

Have a great time.

Hi again, Frances. I’m off to a local Walking For Health group on Friday. You were very helpful, thank you so much. I hope my group is as entertaining as yours!
