Hi Foxeyhole. The overwhelming evidence is that Statins help people like us avoid further heart attacks by stopping the build up of fatty deposits in the heart and stabilising plaque. There is a lot of debate around whether or not cholesterol is the root cause of heart problems and whether or not the side effects are worth it when they’re prescribed as a preventative measure for people who haven’t had a heart attack. I don’t have any side effects and take my Statins and my cholesterol is low. Alongside that I exercise and eat well (basically a Mediterranean diet) and have never felt better (3 years on).

If you’re really concerned about whether or not you should take them I strongly suggest you talk to your Doc before making a decision. All the best.

My doctor has stopped taking them after having been on them for at least ten years.

I wonder why?

Good question. S/he might not have had a heart attack, might have had really bad side effects or might have been able to get cholesterol down through diet and exercise to a level that s/he felt was acceptable (or a combo).

My time was running out so I didn't ask. He had been taking them because of family cardiac history.

He had been giving my wife the facts and option to take them (Again) and I asked if he still took them expecting a 'Yes'

He has a letter on his wall that tells doctors to give patients the facts and to let them make their own choice.

I was prescribed them in 2011 when my aortic stenosis was diagnosed and had joint/muscle pain and stopped started three times before giving up.

Take the statins but start eating Brazil nuts and you might be able to stop the statins (with your doctor’s agreement):
