Well not the type, sipping on the beach on a tropical island.

After viewing a program, that common meds like Ibuprofen when mixed with ACE inhibitors (Ramipril) and beta blockers (Bisoprolol) causes dangerous side effects. This stirred my curiosity, being a recent heart patient (stemi).

I usually talk to the pharmacist when buying meds, so that's great going forward. Then, I thought what about drugs in the meds cabinet at home.

Not something I would think of, but an external rub Voltarin Gel for sore muscles. Same side effects as above, even though not taken orally.

"patients treated with NSAIDs post-MI period were at increased risk of reinfarction, CV-relateddeath, and all-cause mortality beginning in the first week of treatment. In this same cohort, the incidence of death in the first year post-MI was 20 per 100 person years in NSAID-treated patients compared to 12 per 100 person years in non-NSAID exposed patients. Although the absolute rate of death declined somewhat after the first year post-MI, the increased relative risk of death in NSAID users persisted over at least the next four years of follow-up."

I thought I was on top of these things, but a external rub for sore muscles, with such extreme repercussions for a post MI patient.

As I take the usual mix of heart meds including Ticagrelor. My question is what other common over the counter medication do one need to wary off, that can have serious repercussions for post MI patients.

One thing that should be avoided are the "cold and flu" treatments particularly those that dry up the running nose, etc. These can cause a marked increase in BP - not good.

Also be very vary of herbal supplements, etc. as some can interfere with the action of anticoagulants, blood thinners and BP medication. Some can set off palpitations as well.

Thks. Yes stopped Swiss Ultivite contains potassium which interacts with ACE inhibitors. Wow, having a MI broadens your horizons.

I always use my local chemist if I need anything and my pharmacist checks my long list of drugs before suggesting anything. Have found he is a lot more up to date on info than my gp. One of my drugs is warfarin so lots of restrictions with that.

Glad to help. I got caught out as well. Sick flu after a staged PCI. Was using cold/flu tabs, cough medicines, ibuprofen and throat sprays.

Had a blond moment. (In my defence I was sick)

I’m a little wiser now.
