I would just like to wish my new valve a happy first birthday. Looking back on the previous year and everything that went on, I don't think I realised the enormity of the situation I was in. On a recent echo the guy said my valve was beautiful. So keep on working well my piece of bovine miracle. And thankyou to the whole team who have extended my life. I am eternally grateful.

Congratulations, a year on. I am at the beginning of the journey, I hope in a year to have lost some weight, be eating more healthily and what's more important loving life. I feel like I have been given a new start, and once I have passed the healing stage, I intend to improve in many ways. x

Snap! My bovine valve was a year old yesterday. I had a dental appointment in the morning and was careful to be precise about my medical history. The dentist read my notes and told me I was wise to have had the operation. Then he told me his father should have had an AVR but chose not to and then, he said, the inevitable happened. I asked if he'd then had a stroke. He hadn't! He'd dropped dead.

His father was 72yrs. I'm 78yrs. I am grateful to be able to look forward to a few more years and have to keep reminding myself to make the most of them. Many happy returns to us both.
