Psychologically you will feel better because the worrying is gone. I was in the hospital for five days and had no strength and it was hard to breath very deeply. After a month with an RN checking in on me twice a week and physical therapy once a week I am much better and independent again.

I had bypass surgery 4 years ago. I don't know what your surgery will be like but I'm assuming they will be going through your sternum to get to your heart. I had difficulty sleeping and developed anxiety as a result of that and the post-op medications.

Consider taking 1,000 mg of a supplement called Lysine after each meal for a total of 3,000 mg. It increases seratonin in your brain and therefore mitigate anxiety. This is not a drug it is an a naturally occurring amino acid in the form of a supplement.

If you haven't already done so, you should modify your diet and lifestyle to address your heart disease. The Mediterranean Diet is considered the best diet for health. You should also walk daily for at least 30 minutes and ideally up to 60 minutes, when you are able to.

Make these dietary and lifestyle changes immediately:

Avoid all sugars, simple carbohydrates and processed foods.

Increase your intake of legumes, vegetables, fruits, avocado, nuts and seeds, and have cold-water fish such as salmon, 2-3 days per week.

Good luck.

Hi Seven-oh. First off good luck! I had an aortic valve replacement in December, so different to what you're having but similar. If it helps I found these leaflets from Guy's and St Thomas' (the hospital I was in) really helpful. But if you have any specific questions more than happy to try and help.

The waiting really is the hardest bit, so stay strong and as I say, good luck!

Nic x
