You should check with your doctor, but given that one dose contains about a quarter of the recommended daily salt allowance which may push up your blood pressure, I'm sceptical that they're a good idea for anyone with heart disease.

Concentrate on loosing the weight by a mixture of steady exercise and diet control. About 1600 calories a day should do it. Getting onto the weight loss glide path is difficult as you will probably have to evaluate your diet fairly rigorously and make changes to what you eat and the way you eat it.

As you have diabetes 2 you may find it useful to visit the Diabetes web site where you will find lots of useful Ideas and plenty of suggestions to making the changes that are essential for you.

You are in for a battle with the munchies for control of your body. Rather than put your hope in the latest wonder pill you may wish to consider joining weight watchers or something similar, where you will be given help, support and plenty of feedback.

The good news is that your health can be dramatically improved, diabetes can be banished and you will be able to look forward to a much more agile life. You are worth it and dedication and determination will be your guiding light.

My heart attack of the early hours of 23 April was both awful but also the moment I finally accepted that things needed to change drastically. Unfortunately it seems that metabolisms get slower and slower past 40 (I’m 51) and losing weight is not easy. There are no quick fixes, I just have to stop eating crap (it isn’t rocket science, there’s enough out there reminding us) and start putting stuff in my body that is uses. I need to have portion control - a horrible side effect of eating rubbish also means you eat far, far more than just satiety. And I need to move more. I’m early days and bloody hell it is a struggle. I take each decision to not to give in to cravings/greed/old bad habits as one decision. I’m walking daily (would like to turn it into running but am having more work done on the LAD in June).

Don’t fall for the marketing, there’s nothing out there that is safe and sustainable, just eat less, eat right and move more. If you’re a group type of person then WW/Slimming world are a good start. I prefer me against the heart disease. The weight isn’t coming off fast, in fact it’s agonisingly slowly, but again it’s taken me 15 years to get to where I am now so I can hardly expect to be a whippet overnight. The difference is - this has to be forever, not just with the aim of dropping a few dress sizes. Any weight loss is really a good side effect of doing what I need to to stay alive. We take the drugs to help prevent things getting worse, it seems a bit silly to then go and spoil it with piles of KFC. I gave up smoking 4 years ago, I can do this too. So can you 😉
