The problems are it is not possible to use anticoagulants (to reduce the risk of clots in AF) when platelets are low, because the anticoagulants would increase the bleeding risks associated with ITP.
Also, heart procedures (such as cardioversion) cannot be carried out until platelet counts have been over 75,000 for several months.
Is anyone else experiencing these problems?

I also have AF as well as CHF and mitral valve regurgitation with ITP, but for some reason I'm still on blood thinners. Since lockdown I havent been able to see my cardiologist but I have had my platelets done and they were still very low. Any ideas why I'm still on blood thinners? Thanks
I wonder what blood thinners you are on? My haematologist said I absolutely shoudn't take blood thinners (such as aspirin and warfarin) when my platelets are low. He has put me on apixaban, one of the newer anticoagulants drugs, which he says are better. However, I still have to stop apixaban when my platelets are less than 50 to reduce risks from bleeds.
It may be worthwhile asking your GP to refer you to a haematologist if your platelets are very low.
