low salt diet

Due to the steroids I’m on I need to have a low salt diet. This is fine when I’m cooking as I don’t add salt, but what do people have when they go out for a sandwich or dinner?? Everything seems to high in salt when it’s processed even salads......

I’m not being too strick on myself, but just trying to be aware and try to make the right choices.

Thanks

We are on a low salt diet. We use very low salt stock cubes, Kallo brand. Eating out is a problem, we ask if they can make low salt meals. If they can't we just have to put up with it. It is only once in a while so it isn't a constant salt bombardment.

Asking the restaurant that’s a great idea didn’t even think that !!! Will let you know how successful that is ...

Not very, in my experience, but it does no harm to ask.

I'm finding it's getter easier when shopping as many products (even bacon) are offered with reduced salt and I buy the old fashioned crisps with the salt separate but eating out is going to be a problem for a while. I don't eat out but would be interested in how you get on if you ask for a reduced salt version of anything.

You need to read the labels. A lot of so-called low salt versions are only slightly lower in salt than the usual versions. They tend to put more unwanted things in them.

So true. As soon as possible when my heart failure is not holding me back I will be preparing all our food. Yesterday I drove to a local shop and bought some cheese and potatoes. The first time I've been able to do o that since last June when I was rushed into hospital. It felt so good.

Hi jimmyq. Not for me! Husband a cheese addict. Even creeps into the kitchen at night and cuts a bit off the block! I always know because he leaves the knife on the draining board 😋 and he has heart failure but to be honest he is at that point where nothing puts on weight and he needs to enjoy his life to the fullest even having Guinness 3 times a week.

You are going to hate me BUT I don't like cheese, cream, chocolate, I could go on. I love cream crackers, ice lollies, toast. I was born in the war. Do you think that has something to do with it?🤔

The one thing that annoys me about salt when eating out is to many so called "chefs" add it and seasoning to their own taste. My girlfriend sometimes watches Masterchef and the judges all go on about seasoning when it is very personal to the individual. A few years ago we went to a pub that had new chef. I was not to keen on the opinions so settled on sausage and mash as the sausages were a local speciality (lower fat and filler). The problem was the onion gravy was so heavily seasoned it spoilt the meal totally and I suspect the sea has a lower concentration of salt!

You are looking out for you, that's very positive. It is hard not to be in control of what you eat, and I try to avoid sauces, both on the table and food cooked in them. Don't be afraid to ask for a salt free, or at least less salt meal. Food outlets want your business, and if they are good ones they will happily oblige

Not what you're looking for?
