ICD and Tai Chi

Hi, I have an ICD (4+ Years) and am thinking of taking up Tai Chi. I am a little nervous of stretching my arms above my head. Does anyone have any experience of this or advice please? Thanks

I have just been making enquiries about tai chi myself!

Like you I would not be able to put arms up , or look up, but I vaguely thought I could tailor it..... looking forward to reading advice you get about this.

Hello Tinker89.

I attend a regular yoga/stretching class and had an ICD implanted March 2018. The advice I was given was not to raise my left arm above my head for a month, after that time I went back to my class to no ill effects, so I would have thought you should be ok.

Good Luck.

Why not just ring cardiology and talk to a nurse specialist to check. I am sure they will say it's okay.

Ask your doctor. Its best to have them say. We are all different so comparisons are not accurate.

I've been doing Tai Chi since last summer. We very rarely stretch our arms above our heads and it's definitely not competitive so if you explain to the teacher it will be no problem. It's good particularly for leg strength and balance (I had a hip replacement last Feb). We also spend time on movements to relax shoulders.
