Flying after operation

Hi,

I’m due to have an aortic root replacement in June. Likely recovery period is 6 weeks.

Does anyone know what the recommendations are regarding flying and overseas travel after the op?

Similar to a bypass operation then, return to work is often targeted at 6-8 weeks.

Except the spread is pretty wide, some people are chomping at the bit after four weeks, others are laid low for six months or longer. My advice would be don't plan anything until you're through to the other side and can gauge the pace of your own recovery.

Agree with Chappychap. Recovery time is an unknown; I have seen six weeks for short haul and twelve for long haul (increased DVT risk) quoted but much depends on how you feel. I developed a slight fever (result of transfusion and electrolyte imbalance) whilst others have had wound issues, infections of varying serious, etc. As said plan once you are out of hospital. Going through airports can be very stressful and tiring!
