Atrial tachycardia

Hello all,

Does anyone know the significance of atrial tachycardia induced when stressed or when exercising?

Does this indicate coronary artery disease or could it be something else? I’m 31. Thanks

It doesn’t necessarily mean that there is coronary artery disease. It can be an ‘electrical issue’. I have episodes of tachycardia, atrial flutter and atrial fibrillation and a recent coronary CT scan I had prior to an ablation procedure showed that I have a coronary calcium score of 0 so there is no build up of plaques in the arteries. Basically my plumbing is fine but the electrics are dodgy. It’s always worth getting palpitations checked out.

Hi Kaz, thank you for taking the time to reply. I am glad to hear your CT scan came back clear. I am under an EP but they haven't even done any bloods so I'm going to ask them to properly check me out. I'm paranoid about having a dye injection (in case I have a reaction) and worried what they might find but perhaps it is best to push them to investigate. Best of health to you x

Thanks. I’m in Australia with private health insurance so it may be easier for me to get things done here. All the best to you.

Tachycardia is a pulse rate in excess of 100 beats per minute, which is normal in response to exercise, and I am 69 and my pulse rate regularly (briefly) goes over 140.

How do you know you have tachycardia?

The ectopics, and how quickly your pulse rate drops after exercise, might be more significant.

I had angina, so I had a scan with dye injection the other day - no report back... on the day they insisted on giving me beta-blockers, even tho I have bradycardia and a pacemaker... and this made driving home difficult.

I have an implantable loop recorder due to previous palpitations/almost blacking out etc. Recently on my first attempt at circuit training it picked up a run of atrial ectopics followed by atrial tachycardia. It automatically picked it up but I remember thinking it was weird how my heart raced for hours after the class but chalked it up to being unfit. If ever I get emotionally charged or stressed I get the runs of atrial ectopics (atrial salvos).

I hope your report comes back okay 😊 all the best.

At least they are “On your case”… and you do not have to prove that you are ill, as I had to.

I have had postural hypotension leading to collapse, due to bradycardia… before I had a pacemaker.

Good luck.
