Hi.
My partner had an ICD implanted after a cardiac arrest last December. The DVLA are still 'assessing' him. It is now nearly 11 months and they say it may take 4 to 8 weeks for a decision. This is for an ordinary car licence. I know they are only doing their job and safety has to be a priority but, like you, we feel there needs to be a review of the medical division of the DVLA and the response times are a joke.
I hope you get sorted. Regards Ron.
Hi Sturon. I understand that if you get your MP involved, they can ask DVLA to get a move on. I'm not sure this would help Milomegan though, as his appears to be a legal problem.
Hi I've sent emails to dvla also minister of transport, who got the complaints team to send me a letter they are say it's legislation why group to license are a permanent bar i agree it needs looking at .because someone who has a heart transplant can drive after 3months. But your up against government rules, I feel with a defibrillator fitted its like having a paramedic with you 24/7. Dvla i sure they don't look at each individual case. Because they haven't contacted my cardiologist consultant.
The DVLA follow a rule book. It is available on line for health professionals. If all else fails you can always ask the Parliamentary Services Ombudsman (PSO) to consider taking the matter up with the DVLA. You need to exhaust the DVLA's own complaints process first. I am now considering if I should take the response time up with the PSO.
