Cardiologist today...

Hi all,

Had the cardiologist today. They have confirmed that I do indeed have a sub aortic membrane with all valves operating ok. This was picked up due to tests after palpitations relating to anxiety. Apparently it is congenital. They are now referring me to The Royal Brompton for further tests and a possible treatment plan. Apparently they have a dept for congential defects in adults. Eventually as I understand it I may need a new valve. So find this info stressful but I guess at least I am being monitored.

The Brompton is a specialist heart and lung hospital. I’m under them for multiple heart and lung problems. Your in good hands with them

I was diagnosed with a sub-aortic membrane in my late teens, the valve was ok at that time. The valve eventually needed replacing and the SAM was removed at the same time when I was 67.

I am 35 now and apparently my heart is functioning well. There is some narrowing at the bottom of the aortic valve. I am not sure whether it is a case of monitoring or what. Guess I will have to wait and see what Brompton say. There was talk of a camera down the throat echo to find out more.

I suspect you will need a TOE (ultrasound via the esophagus) to get a really good look at the valve and membrane.

Thank you. That does make sense. Sorry my head is all over the place and this has all come as a bit of a shock.

I’ve been going to a congenial heart department my whole life and now go to the adult Clinic in that department. Be careful if u go in school holidays as they may still have kids seen at the same time.
