Although August is now over the non-news continues. Today the BBC have an item about the Right Type Of Calorie:- bbc.co.uk/news/health-45549259
What a load of nonsense! A calorie is a unit of energy - nothing more, nothing less. The only message can be that you have to eat a healthy balanced diet, and exercise within your capabilities. Rubbish like today's news item will not get the message across.
One thing made me laugh - it compares a carrot with a diet drink. If I had just been walking in the July heat I would not want a carrot!

Personally I would worry about someone who did not know a piece of fruit was better than a chocolate bar!
I totally get this. Yes, you are correct in saying a calorie is a calorie but the point I think this article is making is that calories from two slices of whole meal bread are better than, say, a mars bar or a ‘ping dinner’; making it a “good” calorie.
Totally agree with you Michael. The article could have got it's message across much better than talking about good and bad calories. As you say a calorie is a unit of energy. Take in more than you use and you will put on weight. Take in most of your calories in the form of fat or sugar and there will be consequences but they're not related to calorific value alone. Balance and moderation should be a simple message to put across.
