ICD procedure

Hi I was wondering if anyone can tell me recovery after an ICD? I was diagnosed many years ago with mild leaking valve now have SVT and scarring of heart muscle. Because my father died suddenly of floppy valve syndrome when he was just 50 my consultant has suggested an ICD. I'm not so worried about the procedure itself but I am a full time carer for my two disabled sons and wondering if I will cope?

Sorry to hear about your recent health , my brother in law had a ICD fitted 6 months ago and he's feeling much better (he had a irregular heartbeat that led to a heart attack ) you just have to take things slowly don't get stressed and stay away from electrical things such as microvwaves mobile phones etc, but eventually it does get better. Try not to worry !

Hi Shamhami. The info I was given by St George's, S London, is that most household equipment (including microwaves) is perfectly safe to use. They just say don't put your mobile in your breast pocket, or linger by a shop doorway security system!

I had an ICD fitted in October 2016, the operation took about 20 mins under a local and in fact I watched it on the monitor. I was advised not to drive for 6 months but that only lasted 4 and I was back on the road. I really hardly know that I have it now, I have to have annual checkups (six monthly to start with). The ICD is not really the problem it's the medication that I have to take that causes me the most problems.

In essence, very little to worry about, the pacemaker side of mine hasn't even had to correct anything for over a year now, it's more of a precaution.

Hi. You might find the BHF booklet helpful on ICD's and also the makes of ICD's have a website for patients and some videos of the procedure. The links are below:

My partner had an S-ICD implanted 6 months ago it took a few weeks to get him back on his feet but each person is different. He has his fitted as he had two cardiac arrests. He had long QT syndrome. So the S-ICD is there in case it happens again.

Hope this is helpful.

All the best Ron.

I had my ICD fitted 4 weeks & 2 days ago. It was 2-3 weeks before I really felt like myself and the pain from the device every time I moved stopped. It weighs 3oz, so it does push & pull for a while, but that has stopped now. My driving licence has been revoked for 6 months, but yours should be shorter as it's precautionary. I do have a brick of a husband looking after me though! All the best.

My son had his fitted in may . It was uncomfortable at first but it does not bother him now . X

Wishing you all the very best. You may need extra help to look after your son's, so hope you can arrange help in advance. Clare
