Hi Barrie

I assume you'll be on some sort of beta blocker to slow your heart rate and lower your blood pressure. The advice I was given was 220 minus your age minus 30. So in your case you max heart rate would be 135. I'm 60 and have had a triple CABG. I set my warning limit on my various gadgets at 130 bpm and try to keep close to that - I try to avoid hitting 140 but don't stress myself if I don't, I just slow down.

Hi Barry, I'm a similar age to yourself and had my CABG 4 years ago, resting heart rate for me is between 50 -60 but on exercising it goes up to about 165. I would highly however recommend speaking to either your GP or someone from Cardiology just clarify things for you.

Hi Barrie,

During Cardio Rehab (post CABG x4) I was avoided to stay below 135 Bpm. 18 months on and a regular runner My HR for a 10k averages around 140 Bpm with the occasional peak of up to 170 Bpm. The guys at the rehab emphasised however not to get hung up on heart rates too much but rather listen to your body.

I could not agree more, not to get hung up too much on HR. When i had my stress test i managed to get my Max HR to 180 and yet the cardio team suggested that I should be keeping the HR below 130 when I am exercising.

At the end of the 10 Mile run, i often see my Garmin telling me that my Average HR was over 130 but I do listen to my body during the run and adjust my pace accordingly.

Hope above helps

Happy running
