First Cardiology appointment on NHS

Having progressed to moderate/severe in 3 years with a valve opening of only 0.58cm, I have just received my first appointment with cardiologist for February. Freaking me out a bit as I had quite a positive feeling more recently.

Does that kind of date sound feasible or should I be insisting on seeing someone sooner? I sort of guessed I might be left for 6 months watch and wait after the first appointment but February for the first appointment is a bit worrying for me.

What do you all think? Should I try and get a private appointment for reassurance at this stage?

I think it is that time of year where all appointments suddenly seem far off, due to the black hole of Christmas and New Year in the middle of everything. (That makes me sound like Scrooge, I actually LOVE Christmas!) Presumably you would be seen sooner if they considered it necessary (you would hope) but February is a long time to wait if you will be feeling anxious throughout. Could you ask for some clarity about why your initial appointment is so far off? That might ease your concerns. I guess you are the only one who can decide whether a private appointment in the meantime would be helpful/worthwhile, depends how much impact your anxiety is having on your life and how much you think a private appointment would reassure you. Good luck.

Hi numberone,

I same as you in february of this year was told my valve was 0.54cm.very scary isn't it when it should nearly treble.

I met the surgeon within 2 months after having a TOE and cardio angiogram and then offered surgery within 6 weeks.

They would be in touch sooner or you would be having surgery within 7 days if the deem it an emergency.

If your symptoms get worse, ring them

Good luck, its frightening and especially when you have not had any experience with cardiologists.

Take Care
