I have SVT diagnosed a while ago now and am on Diltiazem. I have been experiencing panic attacks recently when there is a possibility I may be a little unwell - nothing serious - a cold, or a stomach upset. I am not sure what I think is going to happen but a wave of panic comes across me and I am completely unable to sleep or even just rest and relax.
Has anyone experienced this ? any suggestions on how to control this feeling ?
Many thanks x

Hi there - sorry to hear about your panic attacks. It sounds like they might be related to health anxieties, and a lot of people find it helpful to speak to a counsellor about this. You might also find it helpful to read our booklet on heart disease and emotional wellbeing: bhf.org.uk/publications/liv...
I'm sorry to hear about your struggles with panic attacks. I myself suffered with them for a time and at first didn't know what was happening and it truly was terrifying. Mine came about due to health anxiety over my heart condition and a traumatic experience when a procedure went badly wrong. It wasn't until I was convinced that I was about to meet my maker on the hard shoulder of the M62 in rush hour traffic that I went to hospital and I was told I'd had a panic attack. Unfortunately knowing this doesn't mean it just stops.
I'm not as a rule, a self help book kind of person but once I realised I got into a downward spiral I wanted to tackle it head on. I bought the following book:
I just stumbled across it but I'm so glad I did. It's really helpful, practical and has a sense of humour. It really resonated with me and started my recovery "journey". I would definitely recommend having a read of it.
Hope you feel better soon but remember be patient with yourself.
