Amiodrone allergy

Hello. I had a mitral valve replacement and aortic repair about 18 months ago. The op itself went well, but when I went into AF, I was given Amiodrone and seem to have a rare allergy to that drug. As a result my blood pressure went all over the place with the effect of tearing a small hole in one of the mitral valve stitches. Blood apparently gets pushed through the hole and red blood cells get shredded, leaving me progressively more anaemic until I need a blood transfusion.

Does anyone have a similar experience?

Not the same as you but I had hand tremors and also an over active thyroid both of which were sorted a couple of weeks after the amiodarone was stopped

Hi FMW,

haven't found anything in previous posts on here, are there any plans to repair the stitch?

Hi Heart Star,

No there are no plans to repair the tear. At first there was talk of TAVI, which is, I think, a repair done in a similar way to an angiogram, but at the moment the doctors are just monitoring me. Like all procedures TAVI is not without risk. The tiny hole shreds red blood cells, making me anaemic and I get a blood transfusion every so often. The haematologists are trying to ensure that there is no other cause for red blood cell loss and so whether it is worth doing the TAVI.

Oh for the simple healthy life!
