Contraceptive injection

I am 31 years old and have been on the depo injection for over 10 years , should I consider changing to a different form of contraception as I have heard I shouldn't be on it for this long as it greatly increases the risk of osteoporosis , also how can I get checked for osteoporosis

Thanks

Hello.

I do not know to be honest. I'd be interested to find out.

I had depo as a 19/20yr old.

I do think I remember about the osteoporosis though, that seems to ring a bell.

Options could be the progestogen only pill, mirena coil, IUD.

Can you not take oestrogens?

Best to see family planning or GP.

Good luck 💗

Hello Karlib

You are correct, the depo injection is associated with a small decrease in bone mineral density, which can be recovered after it is stopped. The best thing you can do is to keep using protection and go to your nearest contraception clinic, or, gp as soon as possible to discuss other methods that you could use.

There are several other forms of contraception which you should be able to use that will not have this same effect. Alternatively if you did wish to continue this method, you would need to keep checks with your GP every two years to ensure adequate bone density levels.
