Hi sorry to hear of your nephews struggles. My daughter is turning 5 next month and she is has complex autism and is also non verbal. She has an EHCP ( Early health care plan) which was done by her nursery and various other healthcare professionals that have worked with her- I’m assuming your nephew must also have done that the school have to comply with legally. My daughter is currently at a mainstream school as there were no places for her at the specialist school ( she has a place this September) I have found my daughters school very accommodating of her needs- ie her younger sister woke her up then when she wakes that’s it she’s up and takes hours to go sleep- in that case I allowed her to sleep in as long as she needed and she didn’t go to school that day she was exhausted and they were very understanding. I think your sister is doing the right thing by not sending him in unhappy otherwise it could make it hard to get him to go. My daughter will sleep badly if she’s over stimulated. My advice is to know the “triggers” that cause over stimulating and distress and I’m sure his parents are aware of those. As parents we know what our child capabilities are- my daughter has an attention span between 1 hour to 2 maximum. We do all we can to avoid our daughter getting over stimulated as this causes issues with sleeping and can leave her tired for days afterwards. It’s hard coz you want them to do what other children can do but knowing their limitations is critical. Sounds like your nephew is stimming which can be a result of over stimulating and or tiredness when they are feeling slightly out of place- my daughter stims after school ( she only goes 2 hours a day as that is all she can manage) The non verbal is very difficult as it leads to huge frustration hence the screaming. I hope your nephew is getting SALT ( speech and language therapist) input at school to help him with his communication ( my daughter has that at school and she is now making more sounds & definitely progress is being made) It’s not easy looking after an autistic child- there should be Facebook groups of other carers that might be nice for your sister to socialise with others that understand the difficulties that us mums with neuro diverse children face. It can feel lonely place Xx
