Need help
I am not familiar with how SSD works, perhaps someone else can speak to that. Has he worked with Vocational Rehabilitation Services yet? They should be able to help with education and employment. Regarding counseling and medication expenses, he might qualify for low/no cost healthcare and prescription coverage with a subsidy through healthcare.gov. You can also try needymeds.org for patient assistance programs that assist with drug costs. If he is enrolled in college, the student health clinic should be able to assist for No or low cost or direct him to resources that can.
Hi SnowEJ,The system is different in the UK so cannot advise with financial support but, is there an equivalent to the National Autistic Society there? They can help with advice and possible counselling solutions.
Is there a local autism support group - hopefully you will be able to find others who have already navigated something similar who may be able to help.
An autism rights / advocacy organisation may also be able to help you seek whatever support your son may be entitled to under various government schemes.
It is ideal if the organisations you approach are autism led - by autistic people for autistic people - but appreciate such organisations are quite rare.
I am speaking as an autistic adult who has had to fight for services for many years now and it is the approach I have taken myself.
I cannot advise further as I do not live in your country. I hope Googling to find such possible sources of support will help as a first step.
