My granddaughter who is 10 years old has been raised by myself and my husband was recently diagnosed with ASD and also has Hypermobility . I am really worried about where she will go for her secondary education as her SEN teacher has said she is to High Functional and cannot get a statement. Could anyone advise me on if I can get help and advise regarding this, as I really do not think she will cope in main stream secondary school. As she is struggling in her school now.

Can you get support and advise on how to apply for a statement of an Autistic child also with Hypermobility.

Hi Marie, has the primary school got a secondary school that it has contact with? Once you know which school your grand daughter is going to. You could ask to arrange for her to visit several times so that she can get used to where she is going. Her records will be passed on to the secondary school and both SEN teachers from primary and secondary should meet to discuss the children who will need additional support.
You can ask to speak to the SEN teacher at secondary and ask what provision they would give to your granddaughter.
The current SEN teacher is correct that high functioning ASD doesn't always get a statement but there is still the help available,
I hope your grand daughter is getting the help now that she needs not only with ASD but her hyper mobility too.
Hi marie, just wanted to say my son is ASD with hypermobility. We had 7years of heartache taking him to primary school. I even took a year out of my work readying not just my son but preparing myself for the struggle to come. And when it did he got on great was actually a relief to him not staying in the same class all day, He got on better moving from class to class and if there was a subject he didn't like, well he wasn't there long before bell went again. His anxieties started in 4th year (exams, 6wks work placements) were scheduled for that year. It was then my son stopped attending school completely. We never had any support or diagnosis at this point., so hopefully just maybe you're granddaughter will thrive with the help and support she has. Just make sure the school AND EACH of her teachers are aware of her needs. lack of communication played a big part of my son's decline when he returned to school to do his 5th year. Hope all goes well for her where ever you choose. Good luck.
