Does anyone have any advice about hearing aids? I have CANVAS and suffer from cerebral ataxia and have had peripheral neuropathy in my hands for 20 years. I cannot fasten jewellery and struggle with buttons and when I tried a NHS hearing aid a few years ago I gave up trying to use it. I couldn’t attach it to my ear and the wire kept kinking. My hearing is getting worse. I can’t follow conversations if there is any background noise, and words often sound unclear and it is upsetting not to be able to join in when I can’t understand words and embarrassing to continually have to ask for things to be repeated. I am happy to pay for a good comfortable hearing aid which is easy to fit and wear. Any suggestions please?

I have recently got NHS hearing aids. Because of the issues with my ataxia they gave me plugs that are at the end of the tubes instead of the usual dome part that goes in your ear. For me i am able to put them in with my shaky hands and poor co-ordination.
I was diagnosed with one sided vestibular hypofunction long before possibly ataxia UCLH thought it might be canvas but when I checked out the symptoms they did not match with mine.
I have a hearing aid one side even though I can hear quite well, my thinking was the messages for balance are not even sided. With mine came a recharger that I use every night. Could not be doing with changing battery every few days.
Yes was expensive but worth it. Fits neatly behind ear and have to change the dome, goes over the top and inside ear canal and wax protection every few months. It is quite easy. I think it helps my balance a bit. Every little thing helps!
