Can anyone tell me, I have issues with my talking it’s not a slur but wanting to speak words out but not being able to, I know what I’m trying to say but I can’t speak it’s getting annoying and I’m not sure if it’s the Ataxia can anyone advise me please. My balance today is quite high falling into everything in the house. Such a big difference compared to yesterday.

It’s worth asking your GP for a referral to Speech Therapy, to find out if specific exercises can help vocal cords.

Symptoms, and balance can fluctuate, this is confusing and frustrating, if you find balance is unreliable stay safe and use a walking aid.

My speech is terrible. Many yrs ago, my neurologist said my speech wouldn't be affected but it sure is. I slur & like you, I can't always get the words out.

I had Speech Therapy & learnt what they called the 'slop' technique - it stands for 'slow loud, over-articulate, pause', so speak slowly, loudly, over emphasise words & think about what you want to say, that's where the 'pause' comes in.

I hope this helps. Do see a Speech & language therapist.

They can also help you with eating & drinking difficulties, if you have any issues. If you do, try using a straw. I use a metal 1.

Forgot to say, as Wobblybee said, use a walking aid. Don't worry about what ppl think. Stay safe & look after yourself. Remember to take your time & don't rush anything. Don't try to do two things at once - it doesn't compute in Ataxia brain! Concentrate on one thing only. I used to furniture surf in the house. Holding onto door frames too etc. Outside is scary but I found a walking aid useful. A walking aid might be useful for you at all times (ie both in the house and outside). There's no shame in it. It's all about being SAFE.

Hi

I have this also - in 2022 a speech therapist, said it is no problem from her point of view. I find it problematic, also there is a noticeable time gap before the words come out.

Answering questions causes the biggest delay in my replying and I find difficult and unsettling to answer decision questions eg large or small, sit in or take away? Etc.

Many people have far worse speech difficulties sadly. I am answering because I have learnt so much from this group and perhaps my post may be helpful to someone

Best wishes to you
