What is All About Ataxia?

‘All About Ataxia’ seminars aim to give people who have a relatively recent diagnosis (within the last 2 years) information about ataxia, although we know that people who have been diagnosed much longer have also found them useful. Since the pandemic we have been delivering these as online workshops, rather than in person. The seminar gives anyone affected by ataxia (patients, carers/family members) information about the clinical and practical implications of living with ataxia. It is run by volunteers who are affected by ataxia and have been trained to deliver the programme. The volunteer facilitators will encourage discussion among participants by sharing their own experiences of living with ataxia.

To make sure that the clinical information we use in the seminar is absolutely accurate we have a number of short videos featuring Prof Marios Hadjivassiliou of the Sheffield Ataxia Centre; Ataxia Specialist Nurse, Diane Friend, and a speech therapist, physio, psychiatrist and OT from the Neurological Enablement Service in Sheffield. The programme for the days is built around these videos.

The specific aims of All About Ataxia seminars are to:

1.Provide people affected by ataxia with answers to common medical and clinical questions.

2.Encourage people affected by ataxia to engage with each other.

3.Enable people affected by ataxia to access peer support.

4.Give people who have a new(ish) diagnosis the opportunity to hear how people cope who have been affected for longer.

5.Familiarise people with the support available from Ataxia UK.
