Yes that is exactly the feeling I've had for over 4 years. Some foods make it worse like dense or hard types of foods. Chewy steak, dense cookies.... can affect my throat muscles for days afterwards so softer foods work better.

I don't think a dry throat is the problem but a muscle problem. A swallowing assessment showed it was decreased tongue based movement. I know it's more muscles than just the tongue because it feels like it. As Turner said a drink of water can really hurt sometimes with me too. If I have good cry it can cause pain there too. I dont know the cause but it must be connected to ataxia.

Some of my food such as bread, chips etc stick in my gullet and if i have a drink to try and move it it really hurts as it gies down x

My neck and sort of inside my neck/throat is really uncomfortable most of the time. That was the first real symptom I had. Sometimes it’s difficult to swallow but not too bad. I had a fluoroscopy which shows my swallowing reflex is sometimes out of sync. I was diagnosed with ataxia 11 years ago

Food sticks in my throat as it is going down, it’s painful too. Bread does, I think it is because it swells, my doctor said it is a muscle problem. I also find that if I eat banana on its own it makes me cough especially on a morning, not sure why.

I've bought a device called Qioro it's expensive for what it is but the results are amazing, with speech and swallowing etc., finally something to train the muscles we need

Does it work

It really does my speech has improved later in the day when muscles were getting fatigued. Swallowing has improved.

And to be honest it's minimal work 3 sets of 10 seconds , 3 times a day

Yes I do, that's how I came across it but it helps with so much more, patience and consistency is the key as with everything, but stick at it and it will help.

Let me know how you get on please

I don't think this £145 product has any evidence it works.

I read up on this extensively before I purchased, understand it's costly but when you take into account the work they've done in developing this for the limited numbers they will sell then to me it's understandable.

It is expensive for what it is but I looked at it from the viewpoint that I would pay £150 and in all honesty considerably more for the possibility of improving my speech which it's doing slightly so far and no more coughing after I drink with the feeling of it "going down the wrong hole" this has all but stopped.

All this after 5 weeks of use, excited to see what benefits I get after prolonged use.

But as with everything, each to their own, it was posted because it may help a similar open minded person.

The piece you put in your mouth is like a gumshield if that makes sense it fits in front of your teeth and behind your lips if that makes sense.

I find it woks best if you keep your chain at 90 degrees to your neck and your tongue to the bottom of your mouth .

Found a video for you hope this helps explain better

Apologise please, I suffer from Fiedrichs Ataxia both myself and my Brother were diagnosed early 2004, I have always fought against it and tried lots and lots of different things, early 2010 the training I was doing was reversing some symptoms and I tried in vain for 18 months to try clinical trial but to no avail. My Brother did very little to fight this and is in a wheelchair.

I saw the post re Swallowing and thought I could pass on something that has helped my swallowing and speech too.

I very very rarely take part or post anything on forums primarily because of the pettiness and small mindedness your displaying.

If it's not for you brilliant I hope and pray that you find something that does but please don't cast incorrect aspersions at people that are taking the time to help
