Ataxia type 8? Confused!

For the last 4 years we’ve been trying to figure out what type of ataxia I have. My mother has alot of the same symptoms as I do but has never officially been diagnosed. She’s old and sick and doesn’t want the hassle. She did give blood and permission for DNA testing. This week I had an appointment with my neurologist and was told I tested positive for ataxia type 8. But... if my mother doesn’t test positive for type 8 then I don’t have that!? How does that work? How does one test positive for a test and not have it? I don’t understand!

Is there anyone here who can explain this? I’m trying to get in touch with my neurologist again but right before the holidays it might take a while. Any suggestions are welcome.

It seems that diagnosis is now so much better than it was a more specific number can be given. I wish you luck with this and your poor mum
