I have spino cerabellar ataxia, the soles of my feet are numb and has an effect on my balance when trying to walk.
Hi helsie
Thanks for your question.
As you are probably aware the nerves in the hands and the feet can be damaged in a person with spinocerebellar ataxia. This is called peripheral neuropathy. I think any problem with the feet can affect our balance (I have a cerebellar ataxia as well) I have some peripheral neuropathy in my feet but I have noticed ill fitting shoes or even my toenails being too long can have a negative effect on my balance. I would advise speaking to your neurologist about this and also asking to be referred to a chiropodist or podiatrist who specialise in foot problems to see if they can make any further suggestions to help you.

Thank you for your kind help, I am very careful what footwear I wear. The correct fitting footwear are essential to me, I do walk with sticks. My physio gave a pair of crutches but I find them difficult to use. I also have numbness appearing in my hands feeling as though I am wearing thick gloves. It is reassuring to have this help.
Hi Helsie my daughter has SCA Ataxia too and also has numb feet. She can walk a little but uses a stick to feel where the ground is because her feet can't and splints on her legs to keep her feet in a good position. Maybe a stick would help you?

Thank you for your kind reply.... I do walk with sticks to assist my balance. It is interesting to hear about your daughters condition, I hope all goes well for her
Ah HarryB, a very complicated subject. But, from what I've read, vit E can also be involved with peripheral neuropathy. I've only read it, so welcome further info.
Dear Helsie, Although I have ataxia, I don't have numbness in my feet. I cannot add to what other's have suggested. Just wanted to tell you I'm thinking of you, and hope some of the previous suggestions help you! ;o)
