Stopping dairy has helped

Hiya,

Has anyone else been told dairy could be a massive trigger? I never thought about it until a month or so on soya milk and no dairy and I don't struggle as much through the night. I know it also has something to do with Vocal Cord Dysfunction, but mainly my brittle asthma. I would definitely recommend trialing off dairy for a while if you are struggling to find triggers.

Anyone else found dairy a trigger? Xx

I think it's only worth it (reducing or cutting out dairy that is) if it's a known/confirmed tolerance issue. Like with any foods or food groups, cutting them out when there is no allergy or intolerance can actually create other issues because the body is then so unused to them that then consuming them can be dangerous. If you think there may be a genuine issue it might be worth asking your GP or asthma team to investigate.

I am lactose intolerant, it doesn't make my asthma worse but I do find if I eat lactofree dairy products eg cheese or yoghurt I produce more mucus which makes me cough a bit.

If u think a food group is making your asthma worse deffo a good idea to speak to your GP as it could be an allergy or intolerance.

I have recently been struggling been when the pollen count is high so am thinking of asking my GP or cons for a skin prick test.

A nutritionist advised me to cut out dairy so I started using soya milk. He claimed that dairy "is a known problem for asthmatics". My asthma went from controlled to uncontrolled. I was so ill. But I didn't think it was the soya. I had several courses of steroids but I just got worse. My GP asked if I had changed my diet, job, cleaning products etc. I explained I had given up dairy so he suggested going back to it. Within a week of giving up soya my asthma was controlled. I couldn't believe the difference.

Unfortunately, soya is now used extensively to feed animals raised for meat. It's used in baked goods and a whole range of products.

I'm aspirin sensitive so expected foods not on the salicylate food list to be OK. Obviously not.

Everyone is different and eliminating foods to introduce alternatives should be done with caution.

Unfortunately Soy is one of my triggers, it gets put in a lot of food these days and I have to be very careful with what I eat

Soy is also a problem for me but I have also found avoiding dairy helps so I use oat milk now.

I should experiment with this as I will try anything at this point. I do love my cheese and yogurt though! How long did it take til you saw a difference?

There are non dairy cheese and yogurt. Some are non soy too. Some are better than others!
