Uniphyllin?

Hello,

I was started on uniphyllin 5 weeks ago, 200mg twice per day. I suffered with heart palpitations for the first few days, but have been fine since.

I’m in hospital at the moment as I’ve not been well, my heart rate has been averaging around 105 bpm, however this morning my heart skipped a beat and then started beating at around 130bpm when resting and going up to 165-170bpm when standing.

They are unsure what’s causing it, but they are suggesting it could possibly be one of my medications, so has anyone had a similar reaction weeks into taking uniphyllin?

I also take spiriva, symbicort 400/12 - twice a day, ventolin, lansoparzole and Avamys. However I’ve been on those for years so can’t imagine any of those causing it.

I’ve not had a nebuliser and not needed to take my ventolin for the past few days.

I got uniphyllin removed from my med list because of something similar (among other reasons). When I was on it my resting HR was often 140ish and would fluctuate greatly (bouncing like yours seems to be). So even tho it did seem to help when I was therapeutic (another of my issues on it) my heart issues and palps etc made the Brompton stop it.

My heart rate this morning is back to “normalish” - 97isb at rest but jumps to 130ish when doing any exhersion.

The cardiac doctors will come and review me this morning so reckon they’ll allow me to go home.

Uniphyllian has been amazing, and finally after a long 18 months of suffering with frequent attacks and hospital admissions I feel my asthma is under control.

I think however I prefer my asthma to be how it was before taking uniphyllin, rather than having these awful palpitations.

My resting heart rate is now back to normalish, but I wonder if it’s because they’ve given me a bag of fluid to run through the night which has probably diluted the product in my body so not affecting me and now that’s finished, I’ll be back to a fast heart rate when I take my next dose?

Hi my husband is on all of those meds except for simbicort and the only side affects he had was upset tummy but now has subsided.

Strange how the same medication can affect people in different ways

My pf was 200 many years ago really struggling so Dr tried uniphyllin and within a week it was up to 400 amazing. I don't remember any side affects after 20 yrs Dr's decided it's an old drug 40 yrs plus so wanted me on montilukast had that for a Yr rubbish for me. So I stropped and told them I knew me better than they did and so they put me back on uniphyllin. It's been perfect with me. However after the first few weeks you should have blood test to check levels as what makes you well is close to killing you. You should then have blood test EVERY 6months to check levels as its levels depend on weight. So maybe they need to check your levels to see if to high? and can lower the dose if needed and this may stop the issues. Good luck

My peak flow is normally 490, which I’m only able to do when im on steroids, however I was blowing 460 yesterday and haven’t had steroids for weeks.

They did the blood test a few days after first being put on it and that was normal and they’ve done another one while I’m in hospital to check the levels but that hasn’t come back yet.

They tried me on montilukast last year and it didn’t make my asthma any better and just made me mega thirsty all the time so I had to stop that.

Hopefully it’s just a one off and I can stay on it.

On uniphyline 400 twice a day last blood test was still sub therapeutic slightly. But doctors unwilling to up the dose much more as it gives them no wiggle room. And both times I have been given the max dose by iv in hospital have had bad reactions to it.

Haven't had many bad reactions to it other than when I take it I am clearing my throat for a couple of hours

I take uniphylli at 500mg twice daily, also symbicort, spiriva, ciclesonide, colomycin nebs ventolin nebs, hypersonic saline nebs also 25mg daily maintenance dose prednisolone, montelukast, carbocisteine, azythromycin 3 times a week, dymista nasal spray fexofenadine, chlorphenamine, also other m3eds and insulin the uniphyllin helps me a little but not much but my asthma is way out of control and has been for 4 years I have fasenra injections as nucal made me worse, after the fasenra if that doesn't work they dont know what else to do as they said there is no more they can do for me really hope uniphyllin is ok for u and your symptoms ease
