Question: Pneumonia Vacs

I'm on shaky ground on this one, but the impression I have is that - in the USA - the standard pneumonia vac is 13-valent pneumococcal vaccine (Prevnar 13) ??

Which pneumonia vac is administered as 'standard' in the U.K. and is it as comprehensive as the USA Vac mentioned above?

Hi

Thanks. Understand your 'No' (in reply to my question asking if the UK Vac is as comprehensive as the USA one) means the USA Vac is the more comprehensive one.

However, as the name of the USA One I quoted (Prevnar 13) is very similar - but slightly different - to 'Prevenar' that you mention (and as you also mention '13') have I understood correctly that the USA Vac is 'the more comprehensive one' and (presumably) therefore 'better'?

Apologies if this sounds unclear or 'thick'.

Pneumo vac has more strands..google it you will see how many. I don’t know about the US/UK difference sorry

Hi Matman

There's some information here: nhs.uk/Conditions/vaccinati...

It looks like PCV is given to children under 2 and pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV) is given to adults - there's a link to the patient information leaflet on the link.

Hope this helps,

Dita
