I have finally got round to buying a portable neb and it came today. Just a couple of questions I have...
It says to move the mouthpiece away from the mouth when exhaling, does anyone find they can exhale through their nose instead or do you use the manual setting?
Also, it says to disinfect the parts after every use, with my medix actineb, I rinse each time and soak in warm soapy water for 15 mins every couple of days, what do you do? Should I be using a disinfectant?

I have had an omron for many years....
I don't bother moving mouthpiece....
Do not disinfect with anything with bleach in such as miltons as it will destroy the mesh.
I rinse it quickly , all the top detachable parts, in hot water with wash up liquid. Sometimes I neb through some sterile water if out and about to give it a quick clean.
You can boil the mesh but do not leave it otherwise it will melt and stick to the bottom of the saucepan.... very expensive mistake.
Mine is quite happy being soaked ofr 30 mins in steredent.... I have a spare mesh just in case but current one is years old...
Batteries, I use rechargeables but also have a back up pair of duracells just in case....
It can manage OK if you don't clean it for a day, I forget sometimes ( must do mine as been out today) but generally they are quite good.
clean the contacts with a bit of alcohol such as a sterret if you can get some..... this sometimes gets mucky and it may stop..
It has been my longest lasting neb ( with a couple of fixes a few years ago) though if I am not well I prefer a compressor or my O2....

I tend to use the mask, but if I do use the mouthpiece, no I dont move it - I just breathe out through my nose.
Re disinfection - those instructions assume hospital use (they can be multiuser). I discussed this with Evergreen when I bought it, and he recommended weekly boiling of boilable parts (ie mesh particularly), and other than that, just giving it a rinse, and also running some plain water through it after a neb so that the drug residue doesnt clog up the mesh. So after I've used it, I just rinse the receptacle, put a tiny bit of water in it and leave it on until its gone. DO NOT touch the mesh, they are expensive to replace!! lol
I also bought the mains adaptor so when Im at home I use the mains, and when Im out I use the batteries. It really is a superb little neb.

What a neat little gadget! I have to get my head round a silent neb now lol. I found it easier to breathe in and out with the mouthpiece kept in my mouth. When I tried to breathe out through my nose it did confuse me lol. And as the physio has asked me to practice breathing in through my nose and out through my mouth I don't want to make that less likely to happen. It really is very cute!
Just got the Medix Microneb equivalent. (Same thing, different badge, and different support team.)
I had it as an exchange for a faulty Beurer IH50. I found with the Beurer that, if you did not remove it to breathe out, it accumulated a lot of the liquid and it eventually either poured out of the mouthpiece while in use or caused the liquid to splatter when it hit the outside of the mesh, which was not very nice. Having got into that habit with the Beurer, I do as the book says with the Medix/Omron and do take it out to exhale (if not using the mask). It took a while to get used to this way and it does look to the uneducated a bit like a cigar-sized version of one of those awful electronic cigarette things that seem to be becoming so popular. I cannot be bothered to coordinate breaths with manual on/off. If I am having to use a nebuliser, I am not exactly in the mood to fiddle with things like that. I need simple.
I use very cheap vodka to provide the ethyl alcohol suggested in the disinfecting instructions, obviously rinsing well after, because it is just not possible to get the 70% ethyl alcohol in the UK. Why on earth that is included in the instructions puzzles me. (The Beurer instructions included that too.) I looked up Milton, but it contains Sodium Hypochlorite, which the instructions say should be avoided as it may effect the metal parts (as Kate has already said). I have not yet tried it, but it looks like the ingredients in Dettol disinfectant are suitable. Anyone able to confirm? It must be cheaper than vodka.
I have quickly learnt to be very careful to push the whole of the mesh unit up with my thumb to open it. In the beginning, I found I was sometimes pushing just the white mesh cap cover and risking slipping and thereby damaging the expensive mesh.
I only use this on the go. I much prefer my (also brand new) mains PortaNeb compressor. It may be noisier, although not excessively so, but delivery is far quicker and it is much less fiddly to use in a hurry.

Hi Alan, cleaning with alcohol isnt necessary - those instructions are because the neb can be multi patient use in hospitals (I checked this out). I run water through mine (turned on) after a neb and boil the mesh weekly to get rid of any potential residue. This is on advice of Evergreen.
I have had the same mesh for a few years now, plus a spare, I rarely boil mine, just soak in sterident..... no problems...
I don't remove from mouth while exhaling either....
I never remove mine from my mouth, Im just not that co-ordinated LOL 
Its a great little neb and fits in my bag.
Had to get mine out in the cinema lastnight and with me all the time.I use my reliever first but if not helping change over to my neb but always let the doctor know when had a big attack.
My asthma is alot worse now and moved me up to a new consultant who will meet next month.
