So, anyone looking forward to the footy?

It is almost upon us! The Euros kick off at 5pm. I am quite excited anyway... I like to watch sport, but am not one for actually playing sports!

I'll be happy if England get out of the group TBH, it's a tricky one...

Any tips for who might win? I rather fancy Germany (much as it pains me).

No, no, no, no, no, no, and did I mention no? ;-)

Personally I find it boring but my hubby is a complete footie fanatic so all the matches will be on at ours.

I hope you enjoy it piglet :-)

I am a no too! Got to find something far more interesting to do...

Angelica and Malawi2 I'm most definitely with you. The TV is blighted by football for the foreseeable future and all I'll hear in the office is goals, sendings off, bad decisions by the referee and how we woz robbed!

On the up side, I'm no longer asked for my opinion the footie because my usual response is that I didn't see it because I was too busy watching some grass growing.

Anyway, despite being totally uninterested in the whole thing, I hope that Piglet and everyone else who'a a fan will enjoy the whole thing.

If it makes you feel any better my hubby was trying to talk to me about an 'exciting' transfer at Chelsea the other morning.... At 6.30 am!!!

I'll let you imagine my response....... ;-)

Common sense says it will be one of Germany, Spain or Holland.

So I'm going to say France. ;)

NO, quicker it's over the better and don't really care who wins, but soon be time for Tour de France :D

No football in our house! Oooh noooooooo! Lol the only sport in our house is the sport of wheels and an engine! Lol And when no motorsport its classic minis for the win! Ah ha!

F1 and the BTCC (British Touring Car Championship) trump the football here too. I shall be watching the Canadian GP qualifying and race rather than any footy over the next two days.

Definately no football in my house either, it will be F1 that I will be watching.

F1 in my house too.

Angelica, I feel your pain. My son tries to educate me about footie so I let him rabbit on for a while and then nod enthusiastically as if I cared and say something like ""Yes, I see that now. But the one thing I still don't understand is (at which point he thinks he's finally managed to get through to me) what's the point of it all?""

It drives him NUTS and amuses the heck out of me. [leaves the room with an evil cackle]

Well, today I am in sport heaven! 3rd test from Edgbaston v West Indies (cricket if you don't know) after the first 2 days were a washout, England v South Africa (rugby union) and then 2 Footy matches :)

Honestly, I don't understand the attraction of F1 and never have! A bunch of cars driving round and round tracks for 70 laps... I saw a bit of Monaco last week at my parents' last week. Snooooooze! I was glad when my niece wanted to watch Peppa Pig ;-P

Enjoy your sport guys, whatever it is! Our differences make life interesting!

Now, back to the cricket... (I fear I may be served with divorce papers by the end of the day!).

I have to say I'm lucky enough to live with a friend who a) is not interested in football b) has a fiance who is also not interested in football. Ditto F1. Yay! Actually our TV is not really a TV, it just plays DVDs and I watch anything I want to on catch-up.

The 'fiance/other half' bit is important - I used to live with a friend whose boyfriend would hog our TV watching these things. F1 was if anything more annoying as the noise really gets on my nerves!

But hope everyone who actually likes sports enjoys it and gets the results they want.

. I like to watch sport, but am not one for actually playing sports!

I'm exactly the opposite - i can't stand watching sport (except maybe occassionally things like figure-skating / gynastics and stuff) but i love being active and sporty - though not team games. I don't like playing / watching any kind of games but i really enjoy taking part in dancing / running (even though the lungs don't like it!) / swimming / cycling

So in answer to the original question i will be avoiding euro 2012 just like i avoid ALL other fottball games etc!

Annista, you are far far nicer than me...

I just say ""why are you talking to me about football, it bores me, go away!""

It doesn't work though I have to say, he still tells me ALL about whatever 'exciting' thing has happened.....yawn!!!!!!

It's a no from me. When I used to work in a residential boys' school I really got into it, but at home alone? No.

Regarding F1, I WANT SKY!! How dare the Beeb sell it to Sky!!! Watching only 10 races of a season is just a no no. I miss it :-(

So that they could afford to show 'quality' TV like the voice, ripped off from foreign formats...

Angelica, I'm not nice to my son at all. I'ts quite the reverse really, because my poor little boy (well 6ft+ 36 year old(Good grief, when did he get THAT old?)) still thinks that he's going to convert me to footie and I get no end of fun out of leading him on and then bursting his bubble for him. I know it's cruel but I'm his mother and it's my job to alert him to the evils of the world. On the other hand, it's his own fault because he ought to know by now that it's never going to work!

JF and Piglet, I'm with you both all the way. Rant Alert! Whoever made the decision about ""sharing"" F1 with Sky should be sacked. I'm too damn mean to pay for sky sports in order to watch 10 F1 races a year. And what does the BBC do with all the money? As Piglet rightly says, wall to wall junk TV: The Voice, Strictly Whatsit, Pop Thingy, Britain's got Wossname, TOWIE, Make me Eat Maggots - My Agent Hates Me, Morons in Chelsea (actually I don't think all of these are BBC but I'm having a rant so I'll include them all on the basis that all channels are equally guilty), in many of which they get people to pay good money to vote for their favourite idiot! So now the BBC is making money while managing to avoid spending any on a quality programme and at the same time driving down the standard of output. People deserve better from the BBC. Oh, and I've changed my mind about sacking the decision maker - he should be taken into the Jungle (yes, I know it's ITV but it's my rant and I'll be as arbitrary as I like)and fed to the crocodiles!

I know that huge numbers of people get a lot of enjoyment out of these programmes and I wouldn't take that away from them, I just feel that it's unfair to get to them to pay extra (""only £1.50 a call and 25p goes to charity"")so that the TV companies can make loadsamoney from the cheapest possible programming. It kind of makes me feel that the perfectly nice people who enjoy these programmes are being conned.

Rant over. I think I'll got an have a lie down.

I loved your rant Annista but you must be exhausted!! lol.

Just to add to your rant, I wouldn't have minded if the BBC had kept F1 until there contract ended the end of this season. And when I found out Ch4 had offered identical amount to Sky for it and BBC chose Sky so that no terrestrial channel had it, I was even more fuming!!

I do enjoy some of the phone in reality/talent shows but never phone in... No one's getting my money that way, it's bad enough we HAVE to pay for a TV licence.

Can I go off on another tangent too, to rant over? When is our society going to recognise single, childless adults?!! The only help I get is 25% off my council tax. I am having to work in a second job to pay my bills and have always worked hard. No help is ever given to us, and I believe we are an increasing number...

Just to add, I love being single and have chosen not to have children because I would have had to rely on the state or work all hours to provide for them, something I would never choose to do but we are such invisible members of society.

Oh dear Annista, I think ranting is contagious lol.

No football here either zzzz, as per cricket (even though close to county grounds), rugby, F1, BTCC or Canadian GP. Sorry peeps enjoy but not for me or luckily Mr TJ.

Would much rather watch Springwatch, was just on now :), DVDs, Holby City/Casualty, property shows ....

Agree with Annista, Piglet and JF on the endless reality shows. Since when is that a 'career choice' too?! Annista, love your phrasing talking about your son and football.

JF, good points re single adults and also others who choose not to have children. That is definitely diverting off the original subject here and would easily be a separate topic.

JF, you are so right! I'm not at the stage of having 2 jobs, but it's close!

TJ, I love the idea of reality programmes being a career choice. Sadly, the people who spring to mind seem to have become ""celebrities"" on the back of lack of education and willingness to allow the press into every private corner of their lives, both of which allow others to feel superior. Oh, lordy, I'm off again. Stop me someone!

What I really wanted to add to this thread, bringing it back to where it started, was that I hope the footie lovers amongs us were happy with last night's game - no, don't look at me like that! I didn't watch it, I heard the result on the news this morning. Hee hee hee!

On the subject of the BBC sharing F1 with Sky: they simply can't afford to show every race. There's a freeze on the licence fee at the moment, so whereas commercial channels can charge more to advertises (and are now able to legally use product placement to help fund programming), the BBC has no way to raise extra money through domestic programming that has no resale value abroad (such as live sports coverage).

Channel 4 is a direct competitor to the BBC in that both channels are free-to-air. It would have been commercial suicide if the BBC had shared F1 coverage with them.

I am a Sky subscriber, but I don't subscribe to their sports channels. However, I was pleased to discover that as an HD subscriber I get the F1 channel included in my TV package. I have to say that their coverage is excellent, with much more depth that the BBC could ever offer simply because on the day of a Grand Prix the channel doesn't need to show any other programmes.

Thanks for that - it looks as if I need to get HD!

Yes; even if you don't have an HD-capable TV set, £10 per month for HD is a lot less than the cost of subscribing to Sky Sports.
