I have suffered with allergic rhinitis and the usual allergies (pets, dust mites, chemical products) since I was 5-6 (I'm 31 now). In the last few years I have been having flu-like symptoms where my heart races, my throat swells and I can't swallow, I feel weak and achey, I struggle for breath, am hot and sweaty, get bad sinuses and develop a mucusy cough. The GP says it's asthma (or claims it's a virus) and has tried me on Becatide, Salbutamol and now Serevent/Singulair too.
Thing is I'm not totally convinced I have asthma. These funny periods always happen after I've been in contact with pets, done some cleaning using chemicals, or have taken antibiotics I'm allergic to (e.g. trimethropim). I think it is probably allergy related and possibly even mild anaphalaxis.
If you are struggeling breathing and having a mucusy cough its probably asthma (well, allergic asthma) and I have experienced (and experience pretty often) similar symptoms. I have pretty bad allergies to dust, grass, fish, shellfish etc, but especially the fish makes me feel really weak and unwell, and i have trouble swallowing, i get a bad cough and wheezy and stuff. Hope you sort things out. Are the meds working though?
If you are worried that you are suffering something more serious - go back to your GP! I was a bit confused because you say flu like symptoms, which makes me think several days but anaphylaxis is an acute allergic reaction.
Have you tried taking piriton when you have these symptoms, it is always a good idea to carry some around? (I assume you take regular antihistamines and something like nasonex).
