Had my flu jab. Swine flu jab will be given next visit. i.e. not together.

Is the swine flu jab ready now then?

There appear to be some.

heraldscotland.com/news/hea...

We live in continental Europe and the official approach here is that it is fine to have both shots

but there must be a minimum of 2 - 3 weeks between them.

We have been told to take our severely ashtmatic son to a vaccination centre on the first day of the high-risk vaccination programme which starts here on 27/10/09. As he had his regular jab in September I feel comfortable with the time lapse between the two injections. We have also been told that he will just get a half dose on 27 October and the second half 3 weeks later, due to his size and weight. I was wondering if in the UK everything is administered to children in one shot?

I was told at my docs, should be ready end of october.

can't wait have mine.as I work in a school and no better place to catch it,so with having asthma and not yet controlled cant wait to have it ,soon I hope xxxxxxxxxx

just to put a spanner in works i have been advised by my medical team to not have it.

Our nurse said that they haven't even been told yet when it is coming in but she did advise me to have it.

hopefully getting my first swine flu jab next week.

my brother in law and niece have had swine flu a few weeks ago and were really bad.

Then my dad said looks like my brother and mum might have it,so they will keep away from me for a while and phone me as my asthma is not controlled yet.

Had my flu jab few weeks ago .

Hi,

I had my swine flu jab yesterday as I work on a respiratory ward with multiple cases of confirmed swine flu.

I have no complaints apart from a very sore arm which I am being a big wimp about! Some people were given the seasonal flu jab two weeks before, but not at the same time.

I rang my surgery 1o minutes ago to be told it will be two weeks and they haven't received any vaccine yet.

Hi

Here they are offering both together, the hospital i work at were giving the staff both, just one in each arm. I had already had my seasonal flu jab when it first arrived and had the swine flu one last week - luckily for me no side effects.

Asthma not a priority group?!

I just went to my GP surgery to ask about having the swine flu jab. I have had asthma all my life and I take a steroid inhaler.

The receptionist said that she didn't think it was being given to people with asthma and that she'd been surprised by this. I was told the surgery would contact me if I am in the priority group -they haven't.

Am I right to be worried? Every year I am given a seasonal flu jab there because i have asthma so i just don't understand this. I was pleased to hear the vaccine was becoming available as when I've had flu many years ago I was hospitalised.

not sure how many off us will get it, as today GP's have been given the target of only having to give the vaccine to 50% of the vulnerable group this winter,

I spoke the my GP about it today. Pregnant women are going to get it first, then people with resp conditions etc

Had my swine Flu jab today.gave it me in one injection but said for children will have it in 2 small doses .

PS, IT was the docs that contacted me to come have my swine flu jab xxx

Jabs together

Hi,

Im not sure I did the right thing, as the week before last I was offered both jabs together and opted for the flu jab first then Swine flu the following week. I always feel rough after the flu jab and wanted to minimise the affects. Well, my son came home the following evening feeling unwell, having caught Swine flu from a freind....and guess who's got Swine flu now??!

jab.

i havent been contacted, but a rumor was spread that the jab gives you nerve problems. :S

not sure tho.

Alexandra, no-where have I seen or read anything that says swine flu has a side effect of upsetting your nerves. You have made 5 posts all of which are just about the same thing. I have deleated the thread you started as there is already one running here and it is better to put it all in one place rather than using the ""scatter gun"" method. Please be aware that there are people on here with very serious underlying lung problems and would be lucky survive swine flu I would suggest you provide evidence of your claim before scaring a very vulnerable group of people

Mod hat out of the box and sitting beside computer.

Quite right bex.

Bluejam1878,

Our health centre has set up a swine flu clinic. Patients are notified by letter giving appointment time and date. Young children and expectant mums are the priority at the moment.

Apparently the small bottle the vaccine comes in, contains ten doses. Which is why we're being told to attend this clinic for our jab, as a single dose cannot be taken out for a GP appointment without either vaccinating nine others within a short space of time or binning the bottle. Can you justsee the GP wandering up and down the corridor asking who hasn't had it yet cos he has nine doses to use up? No? Thought not. That's why we have to wait our turn.

On the whole, I'd reckon although all flu isn't pleasant, the great majority of us will be fine. So lets not panic if we haven't had our jabs, eh?

ok, all this swine flu questions, see this.

I'm wondering if i will be offered the jab as I am just going back to work this week after a case of suspected swine flu. they didnt do a lab test though as there are too many cases to do this for everyone, though they have specifically put swine flu on my line for work. I know the advice is for those who have not been confirmed by lab to have had swine flu is to have the jab but whether the surgery will still see me as any kinf of prioirty im not sure. Suppose Ill just wait and see, there are many more who need it a whole lot more than I do anyway

I should have really asked about it when i was there getting my doctors line for work but I'm forever worried about being thought of as a pest at the surgery. Been there so much this year!

You can have them both together one in each arm. My aunt who lives in Cornwall was called and booked in for both on Saturday . Where as I am supposed to be right up there at the top of the list and I have heard nothing!

It sounds like individual surgeries have their own priorities within the priorities....if that makes sense to anyone but myself!

Sounds like a lot up here are mostly concentrating on pregnant women for the moment

The vaccine is being delivered at different times to different surgeries - it really only depends on when you surgery is receiving the vaccine. Some won't be receiving it until nearer the end of November.

Hiya all

Im still around I do pop in every so often I had a call from 1 of the nurses at my surgery about my swine jab they are getting lists from docs then phoning people got mine booked for early thursday 12 nov so as menstoned before i must be 1 of the 10 early birds hehe but at lest i will b covered then. Anyone know about non asthma parters getting jabed to safe gude. I had my normal flu jab a few weeks back.

I haven't been offered a ""normal"" flu vaccination yet, but I just had a phone call offering the swine 'flu one. I was fairly undecided, but put on the spot on the phone, I said no. Earlier in the year I really felt my lungs weren't in any state to resist anything, and I would have said yes, but I'm feeling a lot better now, and don't often get 'flu. Who knows if that was the right decision?

hiya all

I had my swine jab this morning now got 2 sort arms as I was invited 2 also take part in a health study 2 monitor response of antibodies so i jumped at the chance 2 get invold so I had my jab then fill in some paper work n had a blood test done. Got 2 have another blood test on 3 Dec so it should be intresting 2 see what responce i have. Hehe looks like someone wants my blood after all as I'm on long term antibotics i cant give blood so resurch next best thing.

Are any other clinics doing these tests 2 I would love 2 hear back from others

i had my swine flu AND normal flu jabs last night- one in each arm.

the nurses took a few minutes to decide what to do as im back on pred for my asthma at the moment but dont seem to have a cold virus. they decided that because i have a surpressed immune system (presumeably from being on steroids?) i need the jabs asap and i have to agree with them because my last cold put me on pred for 2 months and got me admitted twice. ive been wanting my normal flu jab for weeks now!

However i did hear in my drs surgery that they have lots of phases for the swine flu jabs (i cant remember if the receptionist said 5 or 10 phases). at the moment they are only doing phase one- people with surpressed immune systems, and that other people will be called in next. i was in the first batch of people as they had only got their first shipment on tuesday afternoon i think.

have to say the swine flu jab is alot more painful than the normal flu one. I dont even twinge at the injection itself, but the direct aftereffect was noticeable- i didnt feel a thing in my normal flu arm, but the swine flu one stung for a good half an hour. Today my swine flu arm is extremely sore, swollen and achey, normal flu arm is the tiniest bit tender but otherwise completely normal and unnoticeable! surprising how different they are!

well it looks like unless you happen to be one of the first 500 to get the jab in your practice, then be prepared to wait, as supplies dry up.

swine flu jab

Had mine on wednesday called in by doctors surgery.

gill

My mum asked for me yesterday and my surgery havent started yet, though they have all the stuff in

The receptionist said she thinks pregnant women and kids are first for them

My dad had both swine flu and normal one in diff arms on same day and next day was off with a tempreture.

I not been asked at all yet but then my dad does work with cancer patients.

Spoke to surgery on thursday.I was on their number one list and could have had jab right away. As I need the 'egg free' version they will need to contact the PCT.

John

Had phone call from surgery today. The 'egg free jab' will be given at a central location and not my own surgery. They still do not know the location or date.

my son is due to have 2nd part of flu jab on monday and then first of swine flu on friday, is this gap in time safe?

Jab due this week

Well Im off to have my swine flu Jab this tuesday. To be honest I am a little scared but I look at it this way if kids have had it and front line workers I think I can be brave enough. I know I have been affected by all the scary stories but the options are simple risk a fully blown flu or a couple of days being off colour. My son in law had his on Friday and was under the weather on Saturday with temp , headache and felt nauseus but when I spoke to him today he was feeling a lot better and getting back to normal so Ive decided to to have it . So will let you know next week how it goes .

Well I had my invitation letter come today. Make an appointment for next Thursday, or sign and return the attached disclaimer if I don't want the jab. After spending quite a bit of time last weekend scouring the web, it appears that diabetics and obese people are at greater risk than asthmatics, but it seems easier to just get the jab, and not bother with the stupid form. Guess they want something in writing to confirm you declined the invitation in case you end up six feet under.

had my swine flu jab on Monday. had a sore arm and that was it. my daughter had hers done as well shes 12 and she only got a sore arm as well. hope this helps someone who's worrying about having it done. i was a bit worried but had no side effects at all. xxx

Well just booked my jab for 21 December. No chance of a weekend clinic, as predicted, so time off work again. Am going out for dinner that night so hope it doesn't put me off eating. But then, just looked at the weekly flu figures and although there's less flu around, the number of intensive care cases is still rising.

Getting my swine flu jab on Monday (works closed for St Andrews day anyway)

Been fobbed off by the receptionists for weeks but asked the doc when I was in to see him today. he was not happy that I had been fobbed off like that and told them to book me in for Monday morning

Well I eventually had my jab on Tuesday and I have had some reaction to it . I had a mussy headache and sore arm Tuesday night and Wednesday but it did not stop me going to work. Which I was worried about . Thursday I felt fine all day then Friday morning work up feeling really out of sorts went to work but had to come home at lunchtime spent rest of yesterday on the settee with paracetamol and water feeling hot and achy with no appetite so off for an early night and slept well today I feel a little washed out, good job its the weekend and I can rest up. Iam glad I did have it though

Hope all of you booked in are fine . Take Care .

ps I had my winter flu jab 3 weeks ago with no reactions other than a sore arm so who knows how these things go!!!

Mo

MO - I was completely the other way round! Horrid reaction to the seasonal 'flu jab, really knocked me completely and so was worried about the swine 'flu one, but all I experienced was a slightly tender arm the following day! I'll be interested to see if the second dose gives the same reaction - does anyone know if second doses are worse or better?

Well I had my swine flu jab this morning and have been curled up on the sofa for hours shivering and aching. Temp 37.7 and feel really grotty. I dread to think what the real thing feels like. My arm is so sore that changing into my pjs was a challenge, I couldn't get my jumper off. I felt a bit off with flu like symptoms with my seasonal flu jab but nothing like this.

As an aside...I've heard of a few people having their jab in two doses mainly because of their steroid dose. I'm on a high dose of Cyclosporin and was wondering if I should have been given my jab in one go? What's done is done tho I guess, I just feel so poorly now.

Lucy

Hi Lucy,

Sorry you're feeling so ill, lets hope it soon passes.

However having the jab is probably still a good idea, as this BBC video today highlights tinyurl.com/yjrvoxm

Really hope it doesnt make me ill, I cant afford anymore sick days :(

As long as I make it through Tuesday I could probably take Wednesday and Thursday off annual leave though

I really am glad I got the jab just didn't expect to feel this bad, but then that makes me feel more greatful for being able to get the jab and avoid getting actual swine flu and feeling much much worse than this!

I've been really scared of catching swine flu since I've been on immuno suppressants and thank goodness I made it to the jab without catching it. My temp has come down a bit with paracetamol and I'm all snuggled in bed now. Fingers crossed I feel better tomorrow and thank goodness I've got a week of annual leave next week!

Sparky Fairy, sorry you're feeling rotten, hope you're feeling better soon. I've been told that because I'm immuno-suppressed I need two doses of the swine 'flu vaccine (this is the version most people would have one of) at the standard dose, not a split dose (as young children may get I think). I've had my first and have to go back four weeks afterwards to have the second. What I don't know is when it is/will be effective from, i.e. whether I have some protection or not. It might be worth you asking if you need a second dose, although I'm guessing that really doesn't appeal right now.

In the meantime, paracetamol, lots and lots of fluid and a warm bed (and chocolate if you're allowed it)!

Feeling out of control

Hi there, finally had my swine flu jab last week and thought that I had got away with any serious side effects until 2 days later when they started. The aches and pains first and then the shivers. My shoulder took a week to stop hurting. It was 4 days later that it started to effect my asthma and I haven't had a decent night sleep since for 3 nights, coughing and spluttering everywhere, (I hope tonight's is better). I thought that there may be a few side effects from the vaccination but didn't expect it to trigger my asthma.

Anyway, probably still better than getting full swine flu. I hope to feel better soon.

My mum has had both the Swine Flu Jab, the seasonal flu jab as well as the pnuemoccocal jab, all within a space of 2 weeks. Apart from feeling slightly under the weather with the seasonal flu jab & slight tenderness in arm for a day or two had no reaction to the other two at at all and she's 74. Definitely best to get protected.

Hope all you who were suffering are now fully recovered.

I had my jab yesterday, and never felt a thing, and no problems, that was until i woke up in the night, headache, stomach pain, nauseous feeling and an arm that feels still like it's been used as a punch bag.

Woody

I was exactly the same. had mind Monday and was fine all that day, didnt even feel like id had a jab!

Next morning I felt terrible and my arm hurt like hell and was very red and swollen. throbbint headache to go with it

Made my way into work and asked for the rest of this week off as i cant afford anymore sick leave. Thankfully i got it ok as i still feel off. Still got the headache and my arm still hurts but what is weird is that the redness died away yesterday but came back worse than ever at night time!

To top it all off feel like I'm coming down with a cold or chest infection again

Everyone ive spoken to who have had it have had a similar experience though

I had mine yesterday and touch wood apart from a slightly sore arm I am fine. Mind you I have just had a 2 hour afternoon nap! OH has his next week so we decided to stagger them just in case I got mini flu and so did he.

Bex

I had mine on Tues pm and after months of bad allergy/asthma probs (which seem, fingers crossed to be settling) I feel surprisingly OK, in fact much better than I did after regular flu jab!

Felt a bit sick/dizzy for 12 hrs, then 12 hrs headache/bit under weather/sore arm. Took decision to go to yoga 24hrs after, slept well afterwards and woke up much better!!!

With my recent allergy probs I personally started dosing up on piriton a couple of days before going and took 1 1/2hr before - do ask advice before considering this though - everyone is different.

From what my asthma nurse told me, it's worth doing! Now off the piriton and enjoying a glass of wine!

Hope those who had it recently are over the worst. I now only have a slight ache where the injection was.

PamPam, sending you a box of virtual Lemsips for your cold.

I had mine on thursday, had a little bit of a sore arm a bit like I had banged it against something but nothing too bad I can still lie on it etc. No other side effects, mind you I don't have any trouble with the normal flu vaccine I guess I am just lucky.

Bex

Still waiting to hear about when and where I can have the 'egg free' jab. I chased my local health centre this week. They are trying to find out some information.
