Spirometry result

Hi, I received my spirometry results last Friday and was told that my lung age was 66yrs. But the nurse did not give me my readings, so I picked them up today. My FEV1 reading is 64%., lower than I hoped!

Hi smobyday

Try not to worry about lung age - it really has no bearing on your lungs and has no impact on your condition. It is mainly used a tool to encourage people to stop smoking.

If you would like to go through your spirometry results and you have the full reading then please give us a call on 03000 030 555.

Cheers

Jo

Hi Smobyday

Agree with Jo not to worry about 'lung age'. Nobody has ever mentioned lung age to me only predicted and I would be very cross if they did. I had never heard of this until I joined this site and I was shocked. I have never smoked as I have had a lung condition since babyhood, but I feel to use this method as a scare tactic is extremely negative. Presumably there must be some evidence it works but I am very sceptical.

Smobyday please take up Jo's offer - I feel sure you will feel more positive after a chat.

An FEV1 of 64% places you at the mild stage smobyday by following medical advice on smoking cessation, exercising and healthy meals there is no reason why life should have any major setbacks in terms of lifespan or quality.

I've never been told what lung age I am and I don't particularly want to know, I feel how I feel and thats all that matters. Your 64% dosn't sound too bad.

Thank you xxx

Hergernt, going by NICE guidelines, that places me in the moderate stage.

That was a good result excelent,,,i had trouble, getting breathless for about 3years thought it just my very physical job.Saw doc went staight in at 43% hell of a shock,,,wish i had went years ago..However i still lead a very active life albeit a bit slower..IT LIVES WITH ME NOT I WITH IT...

That isn't too as you know. Mine is 55% and I can do virtually everything I always have. So, you are starting from a good place. Lung age is nothing. I bet Annie80 would like a lung age of 66 lol.

Seriously, don't smoke, keep fit, exercise aerobically and you will outlive most people.

My starting point was 27%. I do most things I did before but have to keep stopping quite often to breathe properly. It's annoying to say the least but I have it so I have to work round it.
