Jude love, that professor is RIGHT it's not a death sentence and as long as you follow your GP/respiratory specialist/nurse's advice and instruction, get as much exercise as you can comfortably manage and don't forget to eat well then you should go on for years and years
I'm in my 13th year of COPD and feeling good about it I may be jumping the gun a bit *touches wood frantically* but I haven't had an exacerbation in almost a year now all due to the brilliance of my respiratory team and some effort from me.
Keep on keeping on Jude........... and if you feel the need to talk you can always send me a private message, or alternatively, have a chat with one of the BLF nurses on their Helpline
xx
That is really good advice from elian Jude and there are many more on this forum inlcuding myself who have lived with this many years since diagnosis. I was taught Despair is the biggest sin in the book so I avoid the feeling at all costs and have learned to try to keep cheerful for the sake of my son and for myself really and you will too. Taking the medication of course reminds us constantly of being ill but there must be millions of people who have to have daily medication for different and sometimes very much worse illnesses.
Keep posting and speak to your doctor to see if you would benefit from anti-deppressants, if thats the right spelling, or from a bit of physio or counselling. Look after yourself as much as possible and you'll be fine xx
Ah banner, all the above advice plus, something I posted a while ago about someone celebrating her 83rd birthday, 'had copd for years' everyone says, she's in really good nick, and back in the day you never saw her without a cig in her hand, think she gave up when she was about 70 a) because her chest was playing up b) because she thought smoking at 70 was unladylike ! Live in the moment, you have heaps of moments in front of you x x
Hi Jude, My husband always feels really anxious when he has a flare up - will he ever be better? Is he getting much worse? etc. etc. I think that is quite normal and the problem is that it can take a while to recover from an exacerbation and I am sure you will. My husbands GP said exactly the same as your nurse - there is no reason it should get worse. As a bystander and carer - in ten years I dont think it has got worse. I think he is able to manage it better. Try to enjoy your life and look forward to Spring and Summer. TAD xxx
Hi Jude
((((HUGS))))
Hi Jude, I agree will all the above comments, I find exercise and a good diet is the answer to a good quality of life living with copd, I was diagnosed a few years ago and I found that worrying and getting stressed made things so much more difficult as being anxious can cause breathing problems, I have learned to think positive and feel so much better about life now, my family are important to me and I don't want them worrying constantly either.
Take care, soon the weather will get better and we can enjoy some bright days and warmth.
