Oooh I do not know what grade I am, all I know is they keep throwing medications at me.

I have an on going cough its the thing that alerted us to something wrong 5 years ago

but everytime I go and have some checks they keep changing there minds and I don't think I rattle in the lungs like other and my oxygen is not bad, . Hope your xray goes well and meds review good idea to have

Hi, hope the tests/review are okay and that you get the medication adjusted to a level that properly controls your symptoms. It is always good to know how severe or not a medical condition is. Take care, Richard.

I am just diagnosed and don't know what grade my COPD is yet, but should get some idea next week.

It was here that someone pointed out to something that is very true as I was starting to have a panic that I am going to be given the worst grading. The fact that I can still run up and down the stairs 5 times without stopping.

As they so rightly pointed out to me, what grade I am given is not really that relevant, the fact I can run up and down the stairs is more important and it is about how I am feeling, about what I can do and the quality of my life.

I am just as guilty for getting caught up in the clinical grading but that is not going to change what I can and cant do.

I am taking responsibility for my own health now, I am now day 9 into being a non smoker, I am eating better, I am waiting for my treadmill to arrive, I have started the NHS couch to 5km in 9 weeks program and with doing what I can do.

Hope all goes well

Well done on the stopping smoking. I am on my 38 day. It is not easy but it will be worth it. I went shopping with my husband looking for a new headboard for the bed. I found that all the beds were in the first floor. I was amazed with myself, I went up and down the stairs no problem. Later on, after I had returned from my pulmonary exercise class, my husband said, as you have stopped smoking, you can have that new bed you liked, and we will go tomorrow and have a good look around. I am thrilled. I don't know my gradr but I assume it is 3. Keep it up

Thanks Polly, you must be so proud of yourself

And hope you enjoy your well earned new bed

I must admit, even with the COPD, I do feel different since stopping smoking

the reason for knowing grading was for travel insurance as they ask what stage your c-o-p-d you are.also sometimes you need this for benefit forms, but as i said after four yearsof c-o-p-d i feel i should know.

Hi Susiecue62 I had a chronic cough I asked the dr's about it on several occassions none of them could tell me what was causing it. It was very flustrating any one else I know of with copd didn't have a harsh dry cough like mine. I changed consultants and my new one took my cough seriously and brought me in to have a camera put into my lungs(can't remember the name for it) anyways it was good she did what see saw shocked her she said that my lungs were full of inflamation that she thinks for most of my life I've had untreated asthma. I never got short of breath but from as far back as I can remember I had a cough. After a long course of steroids my cough settled down. The cough is still there in a very much milder form and when it gets bad as with a cold of something I go back on steroids a much shorter course that I was first but on. I use sertide x 2 daily also sprivia. O by the way I asked what stage copd I had and was told stage 2 moderate.

I started a cough yesterday was so severe I can hardly breath. When I breath in to cough the phlegm goes down into my lungs an I can't cough it out the COPD nurse said don't panic easier said than done when your choking! She said its a virus and possibly not to do with the COPD, also drs receptionist said loads of people have it. Why wasn't I told this yesterday when I was seriously terrified! What a life!

I agree you would be best asking your dr to get you seen in your hospital and ask if they can check for an asthma component in your copd. I do hope they can find out the cause of your cough and treat it.

Best wishes to all the new non smokers, not sure about those with chronic coughs though, I've been to many different drs over many years and no one has been able to find the cause of the cough or a treatment to releive it even the specialist cough clinic!!!If any one knows a cough cure I would be delighted to know what it is, so I'm sure would many asthmatics who have ongoing chronic cough.

katie trin.I think you may benifit by using a nubuliser.it helps to brings up from the lungs that which you cannot .which one can purchase; and the nebuls or vials are"Salbutamol" which are inhaled but the doctor will have to prescribe for you.hope that goes well for you
