Advice needed regarding finance, I go on to half pay next month and wondered if I would be entitled to any financial help during this time? I've never been on any kind of benefit in my life so don't know the procedure or what to do can anyone advise ? Thank you.

I don't know what you do for a living but your half wages would have to be very low to qualify you for benefits I think. My advice would be to ring the BLF helpline on 03000 030 555 as they have someone who can maybe help with this. Good luck. Auntymary x

Hi Astral11

I'm glad to read you are on the road to recovery - getting over pneumonia can take time to get over so try to take it easy and not stretch yourself too much.

Regarding the financial advice question, can you call us on the helpline 03000 030 555, questions like this can be easier to answer over the phone.

Best Wishes

Jo

Look at adviceguide.co.uk and click on the word Benefits at the top of page. As auntymary said your half pay is unlikely to be low enough to entitle you to means-tested benefits. But have a look at the eligibility criteria for DLA (if you're under 65) - you may be able to claim this working or not. If you're worried about being able to pay the essential bills (such as mortgage/rent, council tax, utilities, TV licence...) again look at the website under the money section, especially re dealing with creditors - there are sample letters you can use. Always better to talk to creditors than pretend the problem will go away.

Hi you may be able to claim housing benefit and/or council tax benefit. You might also be able to claim contribution based ESA even if you are still getting some income. When I worked for the DWP I remember vaguely one of the advisors saying something about that.

Best people to ask are the BLF or the CAB.
