I'm new on here, have COPD and wonder... - Lung Conditions C...
I'm new on here, have COPD and wonder does anyone use Vit D. If so is it safe with inhalers, phyllocontin, anti deps, blood press meds?

Have a test at the doctors and they will be able to advise what is the best way knowing condition and medication. Otherwise it could be a waste of money for no gain the way multivitamins are for most with a good diet.
Thanks greyvote, was really thinking about lack of sunshine knowing Vit D is not in many foods, I will talk to Doc.regards
vitamin D is the sunshine vitamin and if you live north of the was in the winter you will need it, check with your GP, if you take steroids you should also have a Dexa scan to check for ostiporosis and the gp can prescribe calcium and vitamin D tabs for use daily
I would definitely speak with your doc about this, especially if you have been prescribed oral steroids over the years. These can cause bone thinning as can a vitamin D deficiency. The doc can arrange for you to have vitamin D deficiency bloods done and also be able to advise you about drug interactions.
All good wishes

The COPD nurse at my doctors didn't seem to think the doctor would be keen to do this. I will talk to my doctor again and let you know thanks Zoee
Only the older types of dr's seem to think about any kind of vitamin.
Vitamin tablets are really quite useless as your body can not adsorb them all so quickly. A good easy balanced diet is all that's needed really.
Even on cloudy overcast days you'll absorb even vit D, the sun doesn't need to be shining - which is a good job really considering our weather
Hope that helps a bit.
I too live on my own and what makes me stay that way is the Liza Minnelli song Living Alone And I Like It! It's fantastic and if I feel a bit down I play it and boy does it cheer me up!!
Hope you like it on the forum - welcome!
Best wishes
Mike
Thankyou Mike, I honestly thought the sun needed to be out to absorb Vit D, oh well liive and learn is the saying. Thanks for the welcome, I've been reading others reports and must admit its made me feel a bit low. I am usually happy and try not to et things et e down, but sometimes! Oh well, thanks again Mike!
I take steroids, plus inhalers, nebuliser and for 3 days a week I take antibiotics.I have been prescribed "Adcal" (vitamin D) as majority of inhalers contain steroids.(so I'm told)
Hi, I take the meds you mention in your question and have a large dose once a month for my osteoporosis (for which I have a yearly infusion of zolendronic acid). As with any over the counter medicines, when you are taking prescribed drugs you should always check with your doctor. To me, if you can buy it over the counter, then you probably don't need it! Except paracetemol etc.
My husband has all of these tablets (and a few more) and we had a letter from the surgery recently to say that they were now going to prescribe him Adcal for his bones, it is something to do with the tablet he takes weekly - Alendronic (think that is how it is spelt). Ask your GP if you can have it, if not I would recommend buying the best you can. Take care
Asked my copd nurse about it last week and she said if you are outside for twenty minutes every day with your sleeves up you should be ok but she is sending me for a bone scan because of the steroids. Then she will decide, apparently the vitamin D helps affix the calcium to the bones
Yes Carole, I don't think you can take one without the other, but having read about Vit D and how you feel if your levels are low or non existent is pretty much how I feel, tired, sleeping a lot don't want together out of bed etc, sort of smacks of the Vit d deficiency, sad syndrome, oh well can only ask! Thanks info Kate
Hi Carol and Katie
My doc said you need to expose skin o natural * (no skin creams on at all) * for a min of 20 mins daily between May and September. Minimum skin exposure face and forearms, the more the better during summer months but not at hottest part of day to avoid other health problems.
Vitamin D deficiency can cause many other health problems, so if you are deficient you need to supplement as well as skin exposure. This year the sun has been very infrequent and here we are going into winter already.
But only supplement on medical advice, too much can be dangerous. Where is my E Zoee? you have two I only want one!
