thinking of taking my mum abroad. she's on oxygen 24/7 and has to have continous flow oxygen, the pulse ones make her sick. Anybody had oxygen delivered in Spain?

Anybody got experience of buying or hiring a portable unit?

There are several highly portable machines and I suggest you do a little research first. I like the Airsep Freestyle (1-3 litres of oxygen per minutes (lpm)). There is a smaller one, the Focus but that only supplies 2 lpm. Other companies have other models, usually a little bigger but supplying a higher rate. If none of these suit try asking your mum's oxygen suppliers for advice. And the BLF do a leaflet about holidays. Good luck.

Are you flying and what flow rates required?

I would suggest you follow auntymary's advice, if she needs >2lpm, or Sequal Eclipse, or similar for 3lpm constant (the pulsing of the Eclipse is radically different from a cylinders with conserver output and can be tailored to supply 6lpm pulsed and "tailored" to your requirements).

Depending on your destination and carrier it may be more cost effective to use the carrier's Oxygen (some is free; others quite expensive) and hire cylinders/concentrator from your mums suppliers agent, in the country visited.

She may need an Oxygen assessment for flying as the aircraft is pressurised to 8000ft

You may need a "Certificate of Airworthiness.....LOL" I think it's called fitness to fly or similar for your flight and insurance, see your mums doctor about this; although ours just looked quizzically and referred us to the respiratory team, who could lend us a P.O.C. but knew little about flying with Oxygen. Could visit your suppliers site or ask their engineers/helpdesk

Good Luck

Going abroad has many hazards for ill people and if a lack of oxygen is already their problem then you need to get the matter sorted well in advance. Medical Oxygen is available in Spain but only be prescription.

If you need continuous flow oxygen, some portable devices are not for you....be careful! It is possible to hire a Sequal Eclipse 5 portable oxygen concentrator for your trip this for holidays and I am on 2ltrs as well. It is also approved by many airlines. eg. Ryanair approve it.

I just googled oxygen for holidays, and found a site...Pure 02, who will arrange to hire out what you need.

It's very easy to get oxygen in Spain, all the forms are on line and the hospital sends the prescription. We have not had a problem. It even lists the nearest supplier for each region.

However...DO NOT go to France, getting oxygen is a nightmare!

Hope this helps.
