Hey you lovely people - yep the smoking dragon is still in his cave - but have irritating dry cough is that all part of stopping smoking? I still sound like a smoker. Also I live in a housing association flat where 10 of the 18 residents smoke on the premises and really don't think this is toooo good for me. Your thoughts? Hugs Lizzie xx

Hi Lizzie and well done again. I coughed when I used to smoke and the day I stopped, I stopped coughing. BUT, my husband never really coughed but started after he gave up so I suppose it varies.

It's hard to be living near others who smoke. For me, eventually I came to dislike the smell of it so that helped. With COPD though, it's best to avoid being around smokers if possible.

I am sure others will have suggestions.

lizziec1 - Is your building served by a community door? as here in Cardiff my brother lives in a block of 8 flats and there are "No Smoking" signs on every landing and anyone caught smoking outside their own front doors in the building itself can be evicted after an initial warning. For the last 2 years since it's been in force he has lived in a smoke free zone and if I visit it's a pleasure to enter the building as I've not encountered anyone disregarding the signs.

Hi Karen yes it has a community door. I am in Cardiff too. There are No Smoking signs everywhere but no-one gives a toss, they even smoke in the communal room, and along the corridors and in the lift, not that I use it. But to be honest it psses me off. xx

Hi lizzie good you're still doing well. We must be all different as Lynne says. I have coughed quite a lot since stopping still have a dry cough daily. I saw the nurse lately to find out if I was using my inhalers properly I use an aero chamber now and whilst there I told her that I felt much worse since stopping smoking and she came back at me with "you'll get worse before you get better". I can't properly relate to having the smell of smoke around all the time as I only come across it when shopping i.e. folks gathering outside pubs, at bus stops etc. however am ashamed to say that the smell doesn't have the effect that I want - i.e I want to detest the smell but don't!!! need to keep looking at this abstinence as having long term benefits - keep strong xx

Oh Lavender. I do understand. I hate the smell of stale smoke, which is what you get mostly, but a freshly lit one does smell nice, but that is enough to satisfy me! I will never smoke again. xx

Hi Lizzie,

i suppose if your not in direct contacted with the other people in your block of flats

you should be alright i would of thought,

Hi Lizzie

Congratulations of your three week quit. Sorry to hear about your cough - I did find I coughed for a short while after quitting - guess it was all the gunk coming up - yukky!!

Hey, how about getting some quit smoking buddies within your block of flats? Must say that I can no longer tolerate the smell of smoke so I really do feel for you.

Take care xxx

Lizzie if your block a "No Smoking" policy contact your housing office even anonymously if you're afraid as I know some tenants are, there is I believe a body that will accept your complaints, especially as you suffer with your lungs so badly. My brother's on the list for moving as he has a bad heart and being on the second floor is a strain for him as there isn't a lift and the climbing is affecting his condition. Would this be an option for you? if I was in your shoes I'd look to moving "a nice little bungalow" would be heaven.

Moving to a little bungalow would without doubt be heaven but they are in short supply. My flat is on second floor but has a lift, which I don't use Am on the list to move but I am about 750th in line with the rest in Cardiff. Lizzie xx

You must keep at them Lizzie - I struggle when I visit my brother "it's the stairs" but the positive note is he's been offered a bungalow and should be in it by Christmas. Do contact the housing and get all the back-up you can, even contacting your constituency representative/s, it won't hurt and they do help.

Well done with the none smoking, given time the cough sometimes goes away but should at least get better. Deep breathes through the nose can help, lots of fluid herbal teas are good, lemon, camomile, ginger and as above add some honey. Hope things improve for you soon.
