I keep reading about this Gym Pass. Could someone explain what it's about and how to get one please ?
Thank goodness for this site and all you nice people ! Another thing my doctor never told me about. I wish I'd known all this a year ago.

best do your exercise at pulmonary rehab first, puff, they can also advise on gyms
Ok thanks for the information. Getting rehab in the first place is a problem at the moment.
Hi Puff,
Just to reiterate what's been said - the gym pass sounds like the gym prescriptions Stitch has posted about. It would be tied into your locality's 'exercise on referral scheme' (ERS).
As everyone has said, it is best to go to Pulmonary Rehab first.
But, if this is hard to get onto in you area, you should still request being put on the Exercise Referral Scheme. Instructors working for the schemes are qualified to provide exercise for people with health conditions. Some may even be specialist respiratory instructors.
Ask your GP or nurse for more info.
Here's a bit more about Exercise referral schemes and respiratory instructors:
Under different names in different places, ERS operate when a GP or other Health Professional advises a patient to do exercise as part of treatment or management for their condition.
The HP makes a referral for exercise which goes to a is a central coordination point in the local authority, PCT or Health Board which receives all referrals from HPs and allocates appropriate exercise accordingly.
The referred 'patient' is then contacted by the referral coordinator, leisure centre or gym instructor to arrange an assessment.
The assessing instructor will be qualified with an Exercise Referral qualification.
Most schemes offer a batch of exercise sessions, e.g. 6-12 weeks of free or subsidised exercise classes tailored for people with health conditions. At the end of the programme, 'patients' are encouraged to join non-health condition specific exercise.
Many local authority gyms offer a special reduced rate membership pass for people finishing exercise on referral schemes.
You may know about the specialist respiratory instructors that the BLF helped to train between 2007 and 2011? Many of these work within exercise referral schemes. If you know that there is one in your locality, you can request that the referral from the HP states you would like to see the specialist respiratory instructor,
I hopes this helps! Let us know how you get on,
Thanks, Katie
Thanks Katie. It's not that Pulmonary Rehab is hard to get in my area. It's my GP. I asked him last week about rehab and he said it wasn't for people like me ( Grade 3 apparently ) but for others who are worse. People on here say that is wrong. So asking him for info is like banging my head against a brick wall.
Puffthemagicdragon what does grade 3 mean not heard it said was told it worked for everybody who is left out by grade
Some GP's use a 4 or 5 grade system
This the 4 grade one my doctor uses. My reading is 43%
besthealth.bmj.com/x/topic/...
This is the 5 grade one.
Hey Squady I've not heard of that before what a good idea. I was offered a rehab course but couldn't commit due to family problems the cops team said they'll put me forward again in September. X
Hi I'm Jim
I have recently been diagnosed with emphysema and pulmonary fibrosis, have trouble breathing , I was lucky enough to meet a very nice Macmillan nurse at the hospital who is part of my team looking after me .
She managed to get me referred onto pulmonary rehab ,I'm only 61 and not inactive but I am just coming to the last 2 sessions and I have found it absolutely brilliant and well worth it.
Its an 8 week course 2 sessions a week for 2 hours. The first hour is talks on your conditions and how to cope with it ,the second hour is exercise under supervision .
Each person is assessed at the beginning and again at the end I hope this helps as I'm not much of a writer but will keep checking to see if I can answer any questions.
Try to stay well regards. Jim
