Got to see my Oxygen Nurse today

Hi everyone, you were all so helpful last time I posted about my portable oxygen, well today I saw my oxygen nurse, who was very thorough, she did my ear lobe test, the reading was 5.7 very low, my aim she would like to be 7.9

I got my home oxygen condenser next Tuesday for downstairs and a smaller portable one for my bedroom to be connected or integrated into my sleep apnea machine. This one I can also take with me in our campervan.

So happy I finally feel someone is doing something to help my breathing, which is just getting worse. Now please God I will feel more active and happier.

I just need some advice on how to get a stairlift installed, how do I go about that would really appreciate some help x bless you all

Sounds like things are moving forward. Good news. We want a stairlift too but the Companies are very pushy. We might try the Orange Badge Company in Lewes, East Sussex. Need to shop around and get the best deal. We have a brochure from Acorn and Stanna so can compare. They’re all very competitive and some do refurbished stair lifts too.

Good luck xxxx

I had a stairift some while ago then moved home, no stairlift and fell down stairs twice - Living in a bungalow now so no need, mine when I had it was fine, but so slow and noisy. Social servises got mine for me, like I say a while ago.

Thank you, the oxygen nurse said to get in touch with social services. Think I might try giving them a call.

Thank you, yes they are at last, I knew things weren't right but it's getting them to see it too.The oxygen nurse said to give social services a ring they might be able to help, might do that first, I don't have the patience for pushy sales people 😉. Love this forum everyone is so caring.

Adult social services will be able to get you assessed, they can also look at other things to help you. They got my mum a stair lift, wet room, perching stools and a rollator with a seat so that she can sit down if she manages to toddle outside for a while with it. They've been brilliant at supporting her independence.

I have done ok with OT locally but not as well as your Mum. What is your location please ?

We are in Leicestershire. It does depend on what budget you have and what you tell them. Mum is fiercely independent, so used to insist she could do everything and was fine, so they didn't help. When we gave her a real telling off, she then admitted that even getting out of bed & dressed was taking forever as she had to keep stopping to get breath and she'd been just having a flannel wash as she couldn't even step in to her low bath any more. We asked for her to be reassessed and she swallowed her pride & admitted everything she struggled with, they were then happy to help her get her life back. The main thing is to not gloss over things but give great detail. Don't give up and don't tell them that you can manage, if you're struggling with anything at all, make sure they know it. Hope that helps. It's literally changed her life as she's not resting all day to get over 10 mins of battling to do something like making a cuppa.

Oh that is so me, I am lucky my husband is fit and well otherwise I don't know how I would manage, my daughter's are brilliant but like you they make me realise what I need to do. Thank you your advice is really helpful. I wish your mum well.

Thanks for your answer. Maybe I am lucky. I just got a visit from a social care practitioner who explained the system and said do you want a stairlift. Think my OT lady may have been responsible but can't ask her as she has gone back home to Malaya.

Wow that's great, but looks like if I want one I am will have to pay for it, I don't get any benifits at all, so maybe I will look into a recon one. Good luck and be healthy. Thanks for your help .

Pulmonary fibrosis trust fitted one for us. Unfortunately husband won't use it now. He says he's only comfortable in bedding.

Hi, so pleased you got your Oxygen sorted.Brilliant!!

Stairs. I of course don’t know your situation but I intend to use my stairs as long as I can without getting a stairlift. It is very good for my legs! Been using oxygen for 9 years.

I have an extra handrail which is very useful, especially when I come down the stairs with oxygen tubing.

If you use Facebook there is a great group called At home with oxygen UK. If you would like to join us then answer 3 simple questions to join. It’s a great group!

Go well

I would prefer to walk upstairs but my hip is playing up so it's getting a struggle, I thought I would look into a stairlift as I don't know how much longer it will hold out. Thank you for your help really appreciated

we are in rented accommodation so we rent a stair lift from Essex Stair lifts, it was installed within 48 hours and the rental is more than covered by my attendance allowance.

Great about the oxygen nurse 👍

I used a company that does second hand stairlifts. I don't always use it now, but as I live alone it is a godsend for getting things up and down the stairs!

Social services will help too, I just needed one quickly!!

Good luck xx

What sort of price did you pay, if you don't mind me asking 🤔

leo60 profile image
leo60 in reply topurdeyspringer

I think it was about £650. Was a company called stairlift express. I now pay £200 Pa for a service and breakdown cover.

I hope this helps, but I would try social services as well xx

Social services can assess you and get a stair lift fitted for free. I have one and did not pay anything and it is also serviced free of charge

Hi, I too have got a hired stairlift from a local mobility company. It cost me £400 to have it installed, which they did within 3 days and it only costs me £40 a month then for the rental. Its really great, very modern and is fitted very close against the wall but screwed in about 3 places with brackets to the stair flooring not the wall, Obviously there are no maintenance charges etc and any problems with it I just ring them and they come out asap. My kitchen is upstairs in my house so its a great help in the mornings if I am having a bad day.
