Having had Bronchiectasis for 13 yrs for the last couple i have experienced pseudomonas on & off. Consultant has put me on trial of colomycin(inhaled) & though it started well at Xmas i had a strep pneumoniae infection & now really suffering with excessive mucus & a really bad sounding chest. Continuing with the trial but feeling quite low.Anyone else had experience of inhaled colomycin please?

Pseudomonas & inhaled Colomycin
Sorry that youre feeling so low with all this Lfc after a strep infection on top of pseudomonas, must be awful. I know there are definitely members with bronchiectasis/pseudomonas who've been on colomycin, they'll be along I'm sure . As its Sunday replies may be a little slower in coming. Wishing you well and hoping this works for you. P
The colomycin is being used to keep down the numbers of pseudomonas. Strep pneumoniae is a different bacteria which requires an oral antibiotic to combat it. You need to inform your consultant. Sometimes people nebulising an antibiotic will stop that whilst they are taking an antibiotic to fight a different infection and sometimes they carry on with the nebulised ab whilst they have a course of a different antibiotic. Over the years I have done both. Your consultant should know what to do.
Thankyou! I did take an oral antibiotic which eradicated the strep but since then suffering with extensive continuous production of mucus.. Despite nebulising 7%saline & then colomycin. Thinking its inflammation but so difficult to improve it.
I’ve been on Colomycin nebuliser for years on and off and now on it permanently. For me, not too many side effects but sometimes hoarse voice. I gargle with a very mild bicarb solution which helps. When I have an infection other than pseudomonas I’m prescribed an oral a/b and usually stop Colomycin until oral course is finished. I also take Azithromycin 3 days a week, sometimes increased to 5 a week when an exacerbation. I’m so sorry you’re feeling low and hope you feel better soon. I must admit when I have a pseudomonas exacerbation I feel quite low and very tired which I’m told by respiratory nurse is a usual indicator. I do hope you feel much better soon.
I’ve been on colomycin for about seven years. I did have a couple of weeks of iv antibiotics before starting to get the pseudomonas numbers down first. Hopefully your consultant will help you out this week. Might be helpful to take a sputum sample with you.
