Good morning Everyone. Just wondering if Everyone else on this group was touched by the harrowing final scenes of last night's episode. I know it was to highlight M.N D. but the fact he was struggling to breathe really affected me, although it was done in a very sensitive way and I thought the actors played a brilliant role as well. Hope your all keeping as well as possible and enjoy your day. Brian

That sounds traumatic Brian. I didn’t see it as don’t watch Soaps but can appreciate how terrific the acting must have been. Hope you’re ok and keeping as well as possible. Take care xxx❤️ Carole

I'm glad soaps have a good social message nowadays to highlight something like MND, it's such a very cruel disease. I can see that it must have been harrowing to watch someone unable to get breath. Scary. The Archers, 'an everyday story of country folk' is my only soap opera - alcoholism and a fathers grief from miscarriage are it's latest social stories but The Archers gets too tedious to listen to at times and I have to take a break.

I watched Sherwood, that was hard going, a lot of nastiness as well as a County lines Drug involving vulnerable children angle to remind people of what goes on in the uk today

Hopefully you're feeling alright today Brian, these things do tend to stay in our minds. 🤗

I’ve only just found Sherwood, and I’m on series one at the moment. I find it fascinating, partly because I went to teacher training college in the 70s around Worksop, and all my practical training was in put villages.

It's so interesting historically. On mentioning it I've looked back to where I was during miners strikes of the '70s. I was in Libya, I came back to UK briefly on 29.12. 78 (daughter's 3rd birthday) to organise a home to return to in Gloucestershire for July/Sept....was it tge three day week and the rationing of electricity/power? My little brother was killed in early Jan 79, the funeral had to be many miles from mum's home due to many crematorium being closed at the time to save the nation's power. None of us minded though, we felt it was supporting the miners.

Good morning peege. Yes I am feeling OK thanks. These storyline do make you stop and think. But I am the type of person plans ahead and overthink things which isn't always beneficial. I have ckd. But it's always been my severe copd that's always been my main concern. Brian

I do envy you! I'm absolutely hopeless at planning ahead 😩

Yes I have done it ever since I started working as a delivery driver and used to sometimes spend part of my evenings researching and planning my route for the next day. But it's not always good to be overthinking things ahead of the event

I watch it when I can but saw last night's and I must admit it was captivating... Done very gracefully and with the phone call to his partner Billy was what brought the huge pools of tears to my eyes.. Paul played this MND to another level ...very sad and yes I know it's a soap drama but well deserved showing this storyline 👏

Bingo88 profile image
Bingo88 in reply to Blackbird9

Yes it definitely was very sensitively recorded the end when his partner called and he immediately took his last breath after hearing his voice. Was very moving. Reminded me of my mother's passing as well. Brian

Yes it was very well done. I think it was when they said at the flat he was struggling to breathe that was it really hit home to me. Brian

I shed tears. I couldn't control myself. I am.battling lung cancer so I guess it stirred up something inside. It was so painful to watch. The actors were brilliant. Take care xx

Yes I saw the episode. It did not make sense how they had an old looking nebuliser, and no morphine to give him to aid breathing. The ambulance took far too long. They did not really explain why his breathing just went bad. A bit distressing.

yes I watched it, fantastic acting, Paul’s mum was superb, hope she gets best actress award

I watched it and was very moved but also very saddened by it as my husband's aunt died of MND and, at the time, we didn't know anything about it except that it was 'what Stephen Hawkins has got'. She lived in another part of the country and we only visited once when she was in hospital. She already had a feeding tube and they were teaching her how to use the eye point communication system. We had no idea how close she was to the end, but she died a couple of weeks later at home.

I think the writers have done well with the story line and it has clearly been well researched, and the acting was superb.

It DID make me think about being unable to breathe at the end and, yes, Brian, it affected me too. I hope you are ok again now. Try not to let it play on your mind.

It also made me realise how important it is to try and get things in place in advance eg arranging some ground floor accommodation, perhaps a temporary house swap with a friend or relative even, rather than being stuck in an upstairs flat.

All involved did a good job of showing the highs and the lows and it deserves every award it will no doubt get.

xx Moy

Good morning Moy I am fine thanks for asking I just had a couple of Thoughtful moments at the end. Hope your keeping as well as possible and not got a problem with stairs. They do help you keep upto date with how your lungs are functioning using the stairs I used to be able to do to the 1st floor without any breathing problems but I Don think think I could do as well now. Thankfully I am in a bungalow. Take care of yourself. Brian

MoyB profile image
MoyB in reply to Bingo88

I'm in a bungalow too, Brian, so not an issue for me personally, but I have so many older friends who are still living in houses that would not necessarily suit a stair lift. Thankfully, none of them has an MND diagnosis, but several have mobility issues already, not to mention difficulty with bathing/showering.

I tend to store info in case I can pass it on to others in the future - that's what comes of being an ex-social worker! - and so I found the issues raised in the programme really interesting and well covered.

I'm glad you're ok.

xx Moy

That must have been difficult to watch. I have not watched Coronation Street apart from 2 episodes in August 1977 when I was in it! I was an active member of Buxton Mountain Rescue Team ! coronationstreet.fandom.com...

it was very traumatic Brian , difficult to watch and brilliantly acted I have to say though that not all deaths from MND are so painful , I’m no expert but when I worked in a care home there was an elderly gentleman there suffering from this horrible disease but he passed very peacefully as did my husband from emphysema As I related on here last year Geoff just fell asleep one afternoon and passed with no breathing issues at all. I always feel concerned for those suffering from any life limiting illness watching these scenes although I know the intention , quite rightly , is to bring the horrors of disease and the need for more research and funding to the attention of the viewers . I hope you’re keeping well Brian xx

I am doing ok Thank you. I hope you are as well we all cope with loss in different ways and some people take longer to accept and adjust to a different life. Take care . Brian

I’m doing well Brian , I seem to have adjusted to living alone although I know I’ll always miss Geoff. As you know I’m being treated for cancer , the prognosis was not at all good nine months ago but I’m on one of the newer treatments , doing incredibly well on it and enjoying life again 😊 xx

Hi Brian 😊 I didn't watch it, but it sounds as though it was thoughtfully done. My mother died of MND about 12 years ago. She passed away quietly, but had suffered greatly.

I am really pleased that the MND profile has been raised in various ways, there was very little awareness when Mummy was ill. It does, however, make me wonder when there maybe some awareness built for we under "the lung umbrella".

Anyway, keep yourself as well as possible, Brian xx

Morning Cough, annoying - got a call to go for pre op today, so looks lile all will be done by Christmas, unlike last year. My morning coughs are not as bad, but breathing at morning is not great. I use three pillows, most are OK but I got some last month and allout of shape. I can't sleep flat,

Bingo88 profile image
Bingo88 in reply to Ern007

I brought a wedge pillow Ern007 and I then put a pillow on top and 2 pillows down below the top pillow and I have eventually got used to sleeping more on the slant and the coughing is not so bad in a morning now so I am not getting so short of breath. Brian
