Holiday insurance

Good morning all, My mum has terminal SCLC and she has just finished her radiotherapy. I am trying to encourage her to get a holiday abroad to reward herself after everything she has been through. I understand you must wait at least 4 weeks after treatment to fly.

My question is, can anyone recommend a good holiday insurance company to use? Are we likely to find insurance difficult to find?

Appreciate any steer

Paul

The only one I can think of is Stasure or Staysure. If you write Insurance in the search bar above recent posts and replies will come up on this subject. It is very expensive however the cost of medical care abroad (and repatriation to UK if necessary) is exorbitant so it'svital to be insured. An international health card is available and essential too, I believe equivalent to NHS health care can be obtained but do please check it out, I'm not sure if it's Europe only.

How about a relaxing spa break in a gorgeous hotel with beautiful views in the UK. Perhaps Jersey or Scilly Isles or Northern Ireland

PS hot tubs are a definite no-no anywhere

The U.K. issued GHIC is only valid in certain countries. If it wasn’t for visiting family in Norway (where the GHIC is not valid) I don’t think we’d travel abroad now, because it’s becoming more expensive and complicated. 😞

PS bumped into a normally healthy friend yesterday, she caught covid on a flight back from Ireland last week. It reminded me that masks are essential whilst travelling......especially airports & planes.

I use AllClear or Staysure depending which gives the cheaper policy at the time. I travel with my mother, both of us have health conditions, though neither of us have your mother’s condition. Both insurance companies insure people with health problems and of any age. I’ve never had to claim though. But, for getting a policy it’s been no problem. It is expensive though. Hopefully you’ll be able to get insurance and have a great holiday 😊

I have complicated health issues. Found Staysure the best for holiday insurance. I always phone them and they are extremely clear in the questions they ask you.

Just remember it’s not only about your mums health at them moment. They need clear answers for all medical conditions from “year dot”!!!! You don’t want to risk an insurance company refusing to pay out for example a broken leg because you didn’t mention you had depression 20yrs ago. This has and does happen to people!!

Hope you and your mum are able to find somewhere nice for a holiday.

Ps remember because treatment is so recent you may need a letter from consultant or gp to say she is well enough to go on holiday.

I have Bronchiectasis, and Diverticulitis, along with 2 hernias, and chronic sciatica. I was quoted over £500 for a years travel insurance, by various companies. I got a quote from Admiral insurance for £153 for the year, so I went with them. I hope this helps

There is a site called Medical Travel Insurance compared, however they may not be able to come up with anything because of your mother's condition and the treatment being so recent. This happened to us so they give you a link to a government page that lists insurance companies that will insure you. If you go through Age UK you will be able to get a quote from All Clear but a bit cheaper than if you went direct. Staysure as others have mentioned are very good. Also you must remember that if you want to travel anywhere outside Europe and North African countries on the Med the cost is going to be very high. We have now stopped long haul and mainly holiday in the Canaries - good weather all year round - about a 4 hour flight, so not too long - and lower insurance costs. Also get a GHIC card before you travel. Hope you are able to get insurance and you and your mother can have a relaxing holiday abroad.

I didn’t know about getting insurance from Age U.K. I just took a look at the website and I’ll try getting a quote from them at some point to see how it works out 👍

I saw an advert online for them and travel insurance earlier this year, don't know how long they have been doing it, I tried them and got a good deal.👍

A word of caution about Staysure.

I had the bad luck to end up in hospital in the Far East.

Staysure policies were administered by a company called Ergo Travel Ltd and claims dealt with by Davies Group. It may be different now.

I received very little help whilst I was in hospital, I had to pay the bill myself which came to £8000.

Staysure pass the buck to their administrators to deal with your claim. It was impossible to get hold of anyone by phone. It took over 4 months for this claim to be settled, The customer service was appalling.

Sadly it is not until you make claim you find out how good and efficient a company are.

Hi Paul, I used PayingTooMuch.com - found them via either Which or Money Saving Expert (recommended for covering existing health conditions). Worth getting a quote from them; I found them very reasonable for an annual policy. Good luck.

Hi Paul I have used staysure and all clear and saga but do not fly anymore as the insurance was getting expensive and the bad air quality in a plane. However I now book cruise Holidays with hays travel and use their Rush insurance company which is reasonably cheap and fill in a separate medical information alongside the policy to which they confirm different illnesses and conditions included. I hope you book something nice for your mum.

Hi, I seem to remember that both my brother-in-law and a few years later my nephew found that insurance would cost more than the holiday. With B in L we as a family suggested that they could go on a cruie without insurance and if he died on the trip, then my sister could either push him through a porthole or ask the captain for burial at sea. They did go on a less expensive trip so much less insurance. I think insurance companies use a cancer diagnosis simply to increase premiums. Good luck with the holiday and more importantly with te treatment. Chris.

I’ve just been searching for holiday insurance and have several chronic conditions. I used the usual sites: MoneySupermarket, comparethemarket and Gocompare. Then I received an email from onecallinsurance offering 10% off and found them to be the cheapest on a like for like policy. If you include USA in your quote your premium will increase significantly. As others have said an EHIC card is a must for Europe. I really hope your mum is able to have a special time.

Saga are expensive, but they have paid up twice without any problems when I have needed to claim.

The idea for your mum is good but many insurers won't cover a recent cancer diagnosis. I would try the ones on this post as I have used them before for existing health issues. Europe is the cheapest as its not long haul. Of course you may get a bargain break which might offset the insurance cost . Good Luck
