Portable oxygen pumps

We'd like to drive in Europe. My wife (COPD) needs oxygen concentrator to maintain blood oxygen levels.

Can anyone recommend a portable O2 concentrator that plugs in the cigarette lighter socket?

Many thanks

Unfortunately portable oxygen concentrators are not designed for continual use.

I have an Inogen one which comes with a cigar charger for car but I have never tried it. They’re made in Germany. Maybe speak to them. Portable pulsed oxygen may not be enough for your wife.

Hi Alushka. My husband is using Inogen One G5 for travelling abroad. It can last for more than 10hrs on setting 1 lpm in pulse mode. It can be used with cigarette lighter socket . However , she can’t use this machine while sleeping . She can use Philips SimplyGo Portable Oxygen Concentrator for sleeping. Have a nice holiday .

I have found that machines will not charge in the cigarette holder on all makes or models of cars. I never had a problem with older vehicles but the last two new ones have not been compatible.

Hi I have eclipse 5 but it doesn’t meet my full needs. It’s fine for short trips traveling in a ferry for example.

Key thing in deciding which portable concentrator is right for your wife is your wife’s requirements so you need to know her prescription such as the oxygen requirement with that off the concentrator as they may only go to a certain flow rate pulsed or continuous flow. Also some can charge while in the cigarette lighter … the eclipse 5 doesn’t charge the battery if you are also using it at the same time.

Sorry I can’t be more helpful.

you oxygen provider should be able to advise you and talk to your oxygen nurse, if your home concentrator is of the pulsed type you should be ok with a portable, The Inogen range are what my oxygen provider uses but they are around £2500 to buy

If you go this route, with two different concentrators, you can probably buy extra batteries if needed to extend the time supported.

Hi Alushka,

I used to use a POC Inogen one G3 which was correct for my prescription which gave me the 02 I needed. I travelled around France and Spain with it in my camper using the charging attachment into the cigarette lighter.

There are several companies in the U.K. from which you can rent a machine for travel.

However nowadays I need a continuous flow, higher prescription and all travel in U.K. requires planning and leaving the country is really out of the equation.

Hope you manage to get sorted.

Go well,

Pauline

I live in Cyprus and my Inogen one G3 plugs into my cigarette lighter in my 2004 Nissan. I also have a double battery which gives me about 12 hours on setting 2. I presume you’d be able to charge it on overnight stops. Enjoy your travels.

Hi CyprusPat, hope you don't mind me contacting you. My mother in law has COPD and is prescribed oxygen, not continuous, just when and as needed...usually after exercise. She, along with my wife and sister in law are visiting the Coral Bay area from 23rd Oct for 5 days catching up with friends as my MIL lived in that area for 10years. As she isn't allowed to bring UK NHS cylinders with her, we are looking at what's available in Cyprus, whether it's possible to rent small bottles of oxygen or even hire a portable oxygen generator. On line searches have proved difficult and was wondering if you had any suggestions. Everything else is sorted, assisted travel at airports, nice new shiny travel wheelchair etc. So if there is any help, advice, phone numbers or contacts you have in Cyprus, it would be much appreciated. Cheers. Mark.

Try the Oxygen Store, that's where I bought my concentrator from.
