Mixed Infection including Yeast found inside my latest sputum sample
Good evening breathing warriors,
Today I chased my Doctors surgery to see if my Sputum sample pot that I handed in last week was showing anything.
As my stats have been well down and I have felt totally exhausted. almost like I have flu or something.
They said they had come back showing a "mixed infection including yeast" and that I was being prescribed tablets that are also anti fungal? The tablets are Fluconazole and I have been given a months supply to take. 1 to be taken every day.
I am hoping to have a phone appointment with the doctor so he can explain it further to me, as I didn't know that you could get a yeast infection on your lungs. Has anyone else heard of a "mixed infection including yeast" on their chest before?
If you have please let me know.
Kind regards
Joe Rogan

I'm wondering if it's Aspergillus which can grow in the lungs - only a real problem if you have an allergy to it apparently causing Aspergillosis or ABPA needing antifungal. I've read some members have had thrush (Candida) in esophagus (or airways?) also needing antifungal.
Personally, I've had oral Candida and was told to abstain from sugar for 3 months (because sugar feed the yeast) and eat plenty of live yogurt.
Whatever it turns out to be at least you're on doctor's radar. Good luck with the treatment Joseph. P
Forgot to mention, over some months aspergillus was showing in my sputum tests, was referred to St George's SW17 for tests. Thankfully only a very mild allergic reaction to it but a whopping reaction to mould.
good for you for chasing up the doctor’s surgery. Hopefully you get the medication soon and it helps you get feeling better quickly. Sending you lots of good wishes.
We, the people with dodgy lungs, are regularly put on antibiotics to kill the bad bacteria, but they kill the good'uns as well. This allows fungi to have fun in our bodies. I regularly had oral thrush, and occasionally down below, when on an AB. Since finding and eradicating Black Mould from our home in Apr 2018, (mould is another fungus), I have had no chest infections, apart from a stint in hospital with pneumonia and pleurisy. Had loads of AB's to clear that, but as usual, oral thrush. Mould thrives wherever water leaks in or into your home, and if it's a water leak in your bathroom or kitchen, it can be hidden away under or behind anything. Worth a look?
What surprises me is that your sample came back with mixed infection and yet, as a person with bronchiectasis, the need for antibiotic treatment for the bacterial infection has been completely ignored for a preoccupation with a candida infection which is more than likely to have shown up.in mouth secretions in the sample and caused by inhalers etc. In the unlikely posdibility that you have suddenly developed aspergilla in your lungs ( it does happen), antifungal meds should deal with it. Meanwhile the bacterial infection needs attending to. I do hope that you have a bronch specialist but am afraid that the response to your results points to the fact that whoever is looking after you does not understand bronch or its management.
Hi Joe, I have Bronchiectasis and Aspergillosis (a fungal infection on my lungs) I was on Fluconazole which is an antifungal drug for about 3 months. They reduced the Aspergillosis plugging a lot although I still have a bit left. My specialist monitors this in case it grows again. Hope you feel better soon 🤞xxx
Hi Joseph unfortunately thrush is very common with us lungies especially if treated with antibiotics.
I usually get some anti fungal prescribed to take after a course of antibiotics. More for lady problems that for my mouth, throat etc. but have used nystatin if I find my mouth area sore. Strangely I seem to be symptomatic in one area or the other and not both at the same time.
It’s very important that you identify the other culprits and be advised which treatment should be priority. Aspergillus can be pretty bad for us… with lung sensitivities.
The lab may have calculated which was more prominent out of your multiple results and felt a priority was for treating one aspect before reassessing the others.
It is difficult to fight thrush if taking antibiotics at the same time.
